Is James Wan the best modern horror filmmaker?

I was just rewatching Insidious and I'm still so impressed by all the tension and terror he creates with such a simple and straightforward concept. The way he birthed Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises just like that :jonny5:

I mean... look at the material :jonny5:

idk I only watched one or two SAW movies with my friends when we were teenagers

I'm not a fan of horror. I find it stupid

The amount of delusional people here who really think James Wan is a better director than Ari Aster hen all he does is use the generic ghost movie format and spam jump scares is very unfortunate. :psyduck:

Tie between him and Ari Aster

He only has 2 good movies, the first Saw and the first Conjuring, so I think not.

The Conjuring is the best horror franchise of this millenium. Saw and Insidious are so overrated though, especially Saw. Gore is not scary, it’s gross.

I like some of Wan’s works though most of them have been a miss (or meh like his recent one with Malignant). Insidious and The Conjuring are both great and aged well. Saw is just not good, never clicked with it.

Better ones for me are Jordan Peele, Mike Flanagan and Ari Aster. I also love Adam Wingard’s stuff.

At the moment I have my eyes set on Brandon Cronenberg and excited to see more of his work soon. Possessor by far is probably my fave horror films in a loooong time. Whew, time for a rewatch methinks.

saw 1 was not just about the gore

it had an intriguing plot and a great twist that tied the movie together

The first and only Saw movie directed by James Wan didn't even rely on gore, it's mostly implied rather than shown :deadbanana:

you all need to chill. Ari did 2 movies and 1 one of them is an overrated mess that drags for 3 hours :rip: wait until he does... i don't know... 5 movies before thinking that :rip:

Anyway art is subjective but I’m glad to be in the majority percentage which thinks Ari Aster's Hereditary & Midsommar are the greatest horror movies of the last decade :foxaylove3:

Yes, he should have directed The Nun too

Malignant skews his average movie quality pretty negatively, so NO
