The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Featuring the song "MY POWER" by Beyoncé, Nija, Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly, Tierra Whack, and Yemi Alade

Looks amazing. Can’t wait to watch.

Oh I'm perched! A nomination could be an easy get for Viola if the film does numbers and the studio campaigns it

The AMA for the movie failed quite spectacularly. The cast member failed to give answers to the very valid criticisms the movie received about grossly misrepresenting the Dahomey culture and just tried to dodge the questions.

You want to shine a light on West African stories and yet this film was shot in South Africa. Contributing nothing to the economy of West African communities. Moreover, it is not your place to tell stories like this. Why not have African filmmakers tell more African stories. The amount of things wrong with this film, oh I can go on for hours..but the previous posts have touched on it a bit already. You and your crew choose to highlight a tribe that built one of the largest slave trades in the world as “freedom fighters.” This just screams Hollywood exploitation. It’s disgusting.

The dahomey kingdom practice slave trade. Even when slavery was abolished in the west, they continued to practice it. They were slave catcher. They kidnapped and sold their fellow black africans to the whites and arabs.

I hope this wouldn't be glossed over in the movie cause these are true FACTS

You are spreading lies about the Dahomey's involvement in slavery and human sacrifices (which France was trying to stop). I genuinely want to know why.

This isn’t much of a Q&A if you’re avoiding most of the questions lol.

How much does this film glance over the fact this empire was built on the slave trade?

Quote

The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves.[2] As a highly militaristic kingdom constantly organised for warfare, it captured children, women, and men during wars and raids against neighboring societies, and sold them into the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for European goods such as rifles, gunpowder, fabrics, cowrie shells, tobacco, pipes, and alcohol.[5][6] Other remaining captives became slaves in Dahomey, where they worked on royal plantations and were routinely mass executed in large-scale human sacrifices during the festival celebrations known as the Annual Customs of Dahomey

This was a really good movie!

I really like this movie. It was long, but the story justified the length of the movie. It felt like this was originally going to be a series and then they realized it could easily just be a long film.

I really liked Nawi's character arc too.

Specially how she fcked the hot guy who had a huge crush on her and then bid him farewell.

:rofl:I don't know why that was so funny to me. :toofunny2:

And the fight scenes were okay. I guess they had way too much acrobatics at times.

Just saw this today. Phenomenal. I thoroughly enjoyed not just Viola but Thuso who played Nawi - that's a star right there! But everyone did a great job. The film was quite funny and charming a lot of the times too, I was expecting it to be super serious.

As for Malik... they ******* KNEW what they were doing. :jonny5:

I mean, they did touch on all of this a tad bit about benefiting from slavery but the opposing tribe was def painted more villainous and present at the port of the slave trade and the Dahomey were heroes. But eh, I get it but it was still good nevertheless. These types of stories will never be told 100% correct, we must learn. Things will be missed or watered down.

WOW that was phenomenal. I really enjoyed it. I was crying like a baby in the theatre at certain scenes :cries: just a few thoughts i have:

I wish Hollywood directors would leave the Black Widow spins and flips ALONE when it comes to female fight scenes :rip: It takes me so far out of the action when I see a woman spinning around a mans neck in the middle of a fight. Whoever choreographed Iron Man 2 has a lot to answer for :rip:

Idk if its just me or not. I see shades of Annalise Keating in literally everything Viola does but it was on another level in The Woman King. The scene where Nanisca got up and started dancing literally felt like it was from an episode of How To Get Away With Murder

And speaking of Viola, did they cut a lot of her scenes or something? She was clearly still the lead character but her storyline felt very disjointed and choppy. I was so surprised Nawi was a main character also because I don't remember seeing her in the trailers or marketing for the movie at all :skull:

The actors all did an amazing job especially the girl who played Nawi (SUPERSTAR) but I don't want Lashana to ever play a role with an accent again. Between this and No Time To Die she's proved she's not cut out for it.

8/10
