I’m sorry but “Butterfly” is Carey’s most overrated album, bar none.

 

Outside of “Babydoll (my favourite song of hers ever, however), Fourth Of July & the title track”, the album isn’t one I frequently listen too at all. As a matter fact, in my opinion, I find Emotions, Daydream, Glitter and TEOM to be vastly better projects as a whole.
 

“The Velvet Rope” is an R&B masterpiece, and helped set the foundation for the more alternative-laden production style within the genre that began soon after and has now peaked 20+ years later.

I did not expect The Velvet Rope to STOMP on Butterfly 

 

TVR is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time though glad ATRL is serving taste

TVR's production is better, whereas Butterfly has the more impressive lyricism.

As for which is more iconic, probably TVR as a whole because it contributed more to its respective sound, but Butterfly's singles are up there.

The question wasn't asking if Mariah or Janet can make as good of an album as Mariah or Janet.

 

It's asking which album you prefer and which is "more iconic".

 

I prefer The Velvet Rope because it's my favorite Janet album.

 

As far as which is "more iconic", that is stupid lingo ATRL gays like to use on here which I find considerably mundane since you really cannot measure that.

While, I love TVR and believe it should be more iconic than Butterfly. The GP remembers Butterfly more and as result Butterfly is more iconic.
