Older women? All of them are still pretty young. You’re acting like they are Madonna age.

Ageism in music was mainly enforced by “big wigs” in the industry deciding an artist was not longer viable at a certain age.

Internet kind of evened the score a bit.

Industry gatekeepers can’t really gatekeep like they used to lol.

If anything, this is a return to how it used to be. Madonna had a #1 at 42 and Cher at 52. Tina Turner and Cher made big comebacks in their 40s. In the 80s and 90s, there were a good number of older artists having success. In the 21st century, unfortunately, it seems like there was regression, but hopefully now it's getting better.

Tons of women have had hits in their 30s, Taylor and Gaga are not affected by ageism anywhere near as much as the others.

But yes Beyoncé , Shakira and P!nk’s longevity is impressive.

all of the artists that i mentioned have a career atleast 14 years old and are atleast 32 yo(taylor being close to 33)

i just don't rembmber that many hits of women 34+ yo on a 12 months peirod since a long time ago

and the last time a woman 32-33 yo or older was the most consumed woman was probably in 2005 with madonna/mariah. yes, acts older than that were very big at times such as sia and JLO but they did not dominate

and shakira is not really young anymore, she is closer to 50 than 40 and majority of people consider that age the start of middle age.

Yep. The teen pop phenomenon at the turn of the century accelerated pop music’s focus on youth. I’d call it a negative impact of Britney / Xtina / those boybands.

30s is still very young, I never understood why women are looked as “older” at that age.

Shakira at 45 smashing and still looking like that is what is really impressive.

Many of these artists are still young yet. As Trent said, some female artists like Shakira who are in their 40s, are still smashing left and right.

Nicki Minaj is also more or less able to find success.

I think this is the effect of social media which segmented our media consumption. New pop girls like Doja, Olivia, Dua or Billie don't have significant fanbases because they entered the game when our habits were different. There is less focus on the artist, more on the songs. So they can have hits while there is industry support, but once that is gone, so is their power, because at the end of the day, no one cares about them as people. Whereas Beyonce & Gaga & Taylor have solid fanbases who care about their craft, artistry and personal life so they carry more power, and therefore they are able to do well, at least during week 1 when the fanbase carries them.
