Many are saying Kevin Fiege made this decision recently due to a large part of the fandom saying there is too much female representation in the MCU now💀🤣 but the obvious answer is because Yelena & Bucky will Pivotal lead players in the movie. Florence was confirmed to have gotten a pay raise to be the face of the film. But Bucky will be the official leader of the team

This could be a great movie if it’s done right. It really needs to be a little bit more like CA:TWS than Black Widow though. The team has been either a) villains pretending to be heroes or b) villains forced into doing heroic acts in exchange for a reduced sentence (aka suicide squad - the marvel edition). Villains pretending to be heroes to get close enough to avengers in order to take them out would have been a great storyline but would have probably required a lot of cameos from other main marvel heroes.

Producer says Thunderbolts will be a Grounded Movie, and will explore different countries in the MCU.

The movie will be filmed in Utah, USA. And will be about the formation of the Thunderbolts. A Team of Antiheroes and Fugitives exploring Trauma. In the comics they are formed by Zemo and have storylines intertwined with Red Hulk. Which is why many fans speculate it will deal with plot lines on the Captain America Brave New World & Secret invasion side of the MCU. The MCU version will be formed by Val and led by Yelena & Bucky reportedly. The production is currently on pause due to the writers strike, but producers has confirmed it will still be a groundbreaking thriller with the introduction of Sentry and previous Marvel characters like Zemo, Ghost, Natasha’s Dad, and Taskmaster. This will clearly be about Supersoldiers and be more like Black Widow and The Winter soldier

Producer also states it will mostly be filmed on practical sets and real locations. This won’t be VFX or CGI type of Film! 
 

I kinda hope Blade goes this route too. Real Locations look better on film. I think Marvel is using the volume less going Foward

Glad they're starting to do more productions with practical sets after the backlash to the insane amount of CGI they use unnecessarily. I'm excited for this one!

I heard that The Marvels & Thunderbolts will be Marvel trying to make more team up films, Similarly to The Guardians of the galaxy. And with Fantastic 4 coming soon, it makes sense. I like to see more team up and group films!

Thunderbolts is gonna be the Big Marvel Christmas Movie next year

 

with it being a more grounded character story, I hope the action is very high budget spectacle.

With this Movie starting to film in a couple weeks. I hope they stay true to making this a character drama. Of course it’s still gonna be a action blockbuster, but I hope Marvel has learn that the only way we start caring about new teams and characters is if they put in the work and make them have interesting stories, Truama’s, and relationships in the Movies. Also perfect opportunity to start tying together the super soldier level characters. This movie can be that Winter soldier meets Guardians of the Galaxy type of vibe.
