McNulty Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 House of the Dragon. LOTR fans already crying because they added a black character
touchofmyhand Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 GOT ruined their legacy so I can’t imagine who’d be checking for this, but maybe I’m overestimating the effect that has on this spinoff.
Dark Miracles Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 (edited) It's tough to say. GoT was more recent and was such a behemoth building up momentum every year, breaking records even though it wasn't on cable. But the ending... I also have to say the main characters in the teaser look like a redux Danaerys, redux Jon Snow, etc. Its only saving grace right now is GRRM's involvement. On the other hand, LOTR is venturing into TV for the first time so it has somewhat of a novelty factor that could draw viewers, and I mean that trilogy was and is a cinematic achievement that comes along every 30 years or so with a still a very established fanbase even though the Hobbit films were divisive. Some of the comments I read from the showrunners in a recent article (Vanity Fair?) were anything but reassuring and from the teaser they are already taking liberties with significant and beloved characters (Galadriel as a soldier?) I fear there's lots of ground for disappointment here. Edited May 28, 2022 by Dark Miracles
rac7d Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 23 hours ago, Jotham said: Even if the writing disappoints, I think Ring of Power will still do well commercially based on hype alone. What hype there is no hype for the show at all?
Digitalism Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Both will be worse that the source material But they will be equally successful
Starkboy Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 Both will "flop" I think. I think LOTR hype is longtime gone tho (sadly), I think House of Dragons is gonna do a bit better
favorite crime Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 Why are people saying HOTD will do worse because GOT ending was badly received but ignoring the fact that the Hobbit franchise was panned af? I don't think either will have an effect, if the shows have good word of mouth they will smash It seems to me tho that LOTR is muuuuuch more likely to be panned because the trailers have all been atrocious and the fans hate everything they've seen about it so far
LP54 Posted July 20, 2022 Author Posted July 20, 2022 Now that both trailers are out, let keep the discussion going
Repelex Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 HOD. Rings of Power is looking to go The wheel of time way, unnoticed and uneventful.
orange22 Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 I don’t think people are checking for Prime Video or LOTR like that… HOD has Matt Smith and HBO so I’m going with that one
Guest Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 ROP based on amazon numbers, Wheel of time had no social media buzz but the numbers were good and that doesn't even have a quarter of the fame that LOTR has.
BNF91 Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 Lord of the Rings is going to clear House of the Dragon.
LP54 Posted August 12, 2022 Author Posted August 12, 2022 Not long before both shows are released and the competition begins.
Nutitle Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Some of yall really thinking that HOTD will flop LMAO
Eóghan Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 @LP54 if you're interested House of the Dragon is definitely winning in the longevity and keepin momentum but Rings of Power had 2 big hype moments at the beginning of the year with "show announcement + superbowl trailer" but they're long behind now
Arcadius Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 ROP should flop just off that overpriced budget. But idk Amazon shows have surprisingly been doing well lately so I expect this to hit. I actually think both shows will do well especially if they're good.
LP54 Posted August 22, 2022 Author Posted August 22, 2022 So far a good start for HOTD as it got 10 million viewers.
harwee Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Massive debut for HoD But I have a feeling that RoP will beat that number. Though I think the real story is a month after their debuts. Its interesting that they debut 3 weeks apart.
AxelFox Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 A year ago I would've definitely said ROP. Look how that turned out HOD smashing out of the hate while ROP received such big backlash it might get cancelled for future seasons I do think ROP could've been bigger if they took a more faithful approach to it though.
LP54 Posted August 28, 2022 Author Posted August 28, 2022 ROP may get more viewers but I sitll HOTD will be a bigger icon in the end.
