Weld_E Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 (edited) Quote In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to find a place to heal. However, someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread soon becomes a fully formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears. Admiringamor Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 (edited) The graphic ending saved it but.... Annihilation >> Ex machina >>> Men Spoiler When the men kept breaking in and different ones kept coming for her I lost all interest. I think it would have been better if she recognized how similar they all looked from the beginning and then she started to mentally spiral. Edited May 21, 2022 by Admiringamor .

Uncatena Posted May 22, 2022 Posted May 22, 2022 I haven’t seen this yet but lemme just say that NOTHING is more annoying in film criticism than “this wasn’t SUBTLE!” Not everything has to be
MadonnasBoyfriend Posted May 23, 2022 Posted May 23, 2022 I hate everything about this damn movie. Waste of time waste of money completely pointless not good and annoying as hell. Hate it and wanna forget i ever saw it.

It works nicely in ex machina. Can largely be ignored in Annihilation. But it just feels pointless here. There is nothing really subtle or clever about the themes, so I suppose he spiced it up with the vibes. But it's just terrible. Very similar to mother!, but like a worse version Mother was amazing, but I feel like people who didn’t have a religious upbringing missed a lot of the references. Did you like Men? It got good reviews but terrible audience scores.
ALA Posted May 23, 2022 Posted May 23, 2022 (edited) I think Ex Machina and Annihilation are both excellent. This... was not. I think as an experience it's a memorable onr but overall Idk if the film works. Edited May 23, 2022 by ALA
Bandito Posted May 23, 2022 Posted May 23, 2022 I think the film is really perfect when it comes to the filmmaking and acting, but the attempts at "horror" start to fall flat near the end for me. It's crazy that the scenes involving Harper just walking in the woods or through the city late at night left me more scared and anxious about her well-being rather than the home invasion / ending sequence. I loved that the ending really went extreme for the last 15 minutes, but the execution just didn't really work out the way I think Garland wanted it to. However, I must ask about what the point of her best friend being pregnant was? Was it supposed to imply that Harper's husband had cheated on her with her best friend or something due to her not "giving him her love"? It was clearly a purposeful decision to have the actress be revealed to be pregnant at the end, I just don't know WHY it was.

I don't know if I like it really. It's just left me weirded out. Mostly that Russian doll sequence at the end. I think the audience scores make sense. I was not prepared for that, even though I expected something ridiculous for the ending. Sounds like Saint Maud... oh. The A24 formula is getting old.
fountain Posted June 2, 2022 Posted June 2, 2022 Ahh the ending Alex Garland has done it again I’m afraid… well, the movie was a little mid up until the climax, but that ending really did pay off, totally worth it and made it a 5 star tbh. The meaning is definitely far from understated, but I think the shock of the final sequences helped balance things out a bit. Didn’t really see the point in the religious imagery though… it’s been done to death and didn’t actually serve much of a purpose here, so that time could’ve been spent elsewhere. Annihilation, Ex Machina and Men all classics
