So in the books they do talk about history a little which will spoil the ending of House of the Dragon but you won't know how it gets to the ending.

 

That said, you can honestly read either first. I would probably start with ASOIAF personally but those are gonna take a lot longer to get through.

Amazing thank you  I think I'll read ASOIAF first.

 

It's just so hard to find versions of the books that aren't mass market paperbacks (at least in Canada)

G.R.R. Martin himself seems to be very satisfied with the show.

He's seen 9 of 10 episodes of season 1.
