It is a radio station that was launched on Jan 01 1989. As of Apr 2022, it is the only radio station in Singapore (a country of 5.4 million in Southeast Asia) that plays primarily CHR/ Top 40 hits in English (alongside a bunch of K-Pop songs). While there are several other music stations that broadcast in English in Singapore, they have a greater focus on Adult Contemporary songs.

3. Could you provide more details about this weekly chart?

 

The 987FM Top 20 Countdown is aired from 20:00-22:00 (GMT +8) every Friday. A repeat broadcast is aired from 22:00 - 00:00 (GMT +8) every Sunday. The chart is sometimes cancelled, especially in the final weeks of the calendar year, as the DJs (claim) they need to tally the results of the weekly chart, in preparation for the annual countdown.

 

On Dec 31 every year, all the DJs of 987FM will come together to host the 987FM Top 100 Countdown, showcasing the top 100 hits of that particular year. There is a repeat broadcast on Jan 01.

 

As of Apr 01 2022, the weekly chart show has 2 hosts - Germaine Leonora Tan and Avery Aloysius Yeo. They appear to be Ariana Grande stans.

I have keeping track of this chart since 2007, but some of the chart data are permanently lost. =( 

 

Do note that the chart existed as a daily chart from 2016 to 2019. During that time, I did not keep track of the chart movements, so I am unable to enlighten you much about that era.

Every song that has been charting since the Dec 17 2021 has been "awarded" 2 extra weeks to its chart life.

For the first time in 18 months (since the Jun 05 2020 chart), there are a mere 5 descending titles on the chart. This paltry sum of 5 is lower than the lowest record seen in 2021, which was set on the Oct 15 2021 chart (6 falling titles). Amazingly, for the entirety of 2021, there was never a week where the number of ascending titles was greater than that of descending titles.

Amazingly, for the entirety of 2021, there was never a week where the number of ascending titles was greater than that of descending titles. However, in the very first chart of 2022, the number of rising titles has exceeded that of falling titles.

Also very amazingly, Taylor Swift's Enchanted re-enters the top 20 at #18, nearly 11 years since its last appearance on the Top 20 Countdown in 2011. Back in 2011, the song stayed for 7 weeks on the chart and peaked in the top 5, amassing 69 points according to the inverse point tally. It was #60 on the 987FM Top 100 Countdown. (That, incidentally, was the only year where the top 100 was 80% similar to the inverse point tally we use.)

After inhabiting the top 10 for a whopping 22 weeks, Stay exits the top tier. However, it still manages to overtake Pink Sweats' At My Worst on the inverse point tally. The former now has amassed 392 points and is the new record holder for most points according to the inverse point tally. (Of course, if not for the cancelled charts, both songs would have amassed in excess of 400 points each.)

Interestingly enough, this is also the first week where Industry Baby, which was held behind Stay for 4 frustrating weeks at #2, has managed to rank ahead of Stay.

Troye Sivan reverses his falling trajectory for the 4th time, as Angel Baby continues its confounding march up the chart. Of its 17 official weeks on the chart, 16 of them were spent outside of the top 10. This is probably a new record!

Jaymes Young's Infinity spends the whole of January at the #7 spot, as does Gayle's abcdefu at #2 and Justin Bieber's Ghost at #1.

Charlie Puth's Light Switch 10 spot leap is the biggest seen in 2022 so far. The last time he was in the top 2 was in 2017 I think. Based on my scant and unreliable records from 2017, Attention managed to snag at least 1 day at #1 (Jul 24 2017), when the chart was on a 5x weekly format. His only #1 in the weekly era was in May 2015, when See You Again crowned the chart for 3 weeks.

In Jul 2017, Attention was held off the top spot by Despacito for 5 days, before ascending to #1. This week, Charlie Puth is held behind by another Justin Bieber song. Will Charlie score his second #1 hit on the weekly version of the countdown?

Troye Sivan's Angel Baby continues to defy gravity, as the track powers up the chart on its 18th official week. Amazingly, none of the 18 weeks was spent in the single-digit region.

1    Justin Bieber's Ghost has finally been dethroned after 10 official weeks at #1. In fact, it crashes out of the top 3 and onto the #4 spot. The last time this song was outside of the top 3 was on the Nov 12 2021 chart (15 weeks ago), when it also placed at #4.
2    After peaking at #10 on the Oct 29 2021 chart (on its 6th charting week) and oscillating in the bottom half of the chart thereafter, Troye Sivan's Angel Baby has finally reached a fresh high of #9, 19 weeks later. It has thus shattered the record for longest time taken to reach a new peak. The big question is, will the song climb even higher in the weeks to come and extend this record?
3    Enhyphen's Polaroid Love has become 2022's 2nd #1 hit, overthrowing Bieber's Ghost. The last time someone from a South Korean group topped the chart was Blackpink's Lisa with Money, also on Oct 29 2021 (though she's technically a Thai national). The last time South Korean nationals topped the chart was on Oct 15 2021, when BTS hit #1 along with Coldplay with My Universe.
4    Charlie Puth's Light Switch returns to the #2 spot, and has cumulatively camped there over 5 non-consecutive weeks. The last 2 songs to spend 5 weeks at #2 were The Weeknd's Blinding Lights and Blackpink's and Selena Gomez's Ice Cream, both in 2020. Unfortunately, neither ever hit #1 on the weekly chart, though Blinding Lights deservingly topped the year-end countdown of 2020.
5    We Don't Talk About Bruno has become 2022's highest falloff, crashing out from #11. In its short 4 week stay, it spent 3 of those weeks at #11, and a sole week at #10.
6    Amazingly, for every chart since Dec 10 2021, no song has managed to debut at #20. Thus, the #20 song of the previous week would exit the chart the following week, with the sole exception of - guess what - Troye Sivan's Angel Baby, which was #20 on Dec 10 2021.     While Avery has been a part-time DJ for a while, he has not had much prior interaction with Germaine, so the chart show today is basically a belated get-to-know-you session for the two co-hosts. Here are a few highlights and paraphrased snippets from their 1st show.

The only other song to ever do that was Stay, also featuring Justin Bieber, alongside The Kid Laroi. Most notably, Ghost needed only 24 weeks to achieve the feat, while Stay needed 27 weeks.

Rather inexplicably,  the song surges to a new peak, spending a second consecutive week in the top 10 (its first two-week stay in the top 10 in its entire chart run), while finally reaching the top 5 for the very first time. (It even co-shares the honor of being the greatest gainer this week!) It goes without saying that it is the first ever song to hit a new peak so late into its chart run.
