My favorite part of this article was them showing her rapping in cyphers.  She was NOT presenting as a singer, but a RAPPER when she first debuted.

This ain’t no ploy to “look good stats wise next to rappers”.  We not gonna do that, when she rap better than most y’all consider a rapper these days (male or female).  :coffee2:  Because y’all really just debating production.

Also loved this too…

In the muddy middle ground are artists like Future, Young Thug, Gunna, the late Juice WLRD, and thousands more who are demeaned as “mumble rappers” by fans who don’t understand them (but still call them rappers).

Yup.  Why they allowed to do melodic rap, but she not? Lol.

And…

As Che Noir told Complex, people automatically assume women in rap have writers, and if they don’t have ghostwriting accusations, men often criticize them for their sexualized content, while having no issue with raunchy raps or repetitive content from their male counterparts. With those obstacles in place for women in rap, it’s sadly unsurprising that fans are reluctant to call Doja a rapper. To many of them, she must not be writing her raps because pop stars have writers, but there’s no indication that that’s the case with Doja, who often posts her lyrics on the SoundCloud uploads of her songs.

YES! She writes, the MAIN skill of a rapper (not production).  And at times she’s often the sole writer too.  Yet, we don’t want to call her a rapper because of beats?  Makes no sense.

u kno back in 2010-2012 Nicki was a pop star and a rapper

back in 2017-2018 Cardi B was a pop star and a rapper

but in 2022 Doja can only be a pop star

make it make sense y'all

i fight have da internet every day because some don't wanna call her a rapper and others are like why label her she is so versatile

its not about labeling her its about giving her her flowers as a rapper

Amala - Rapper, Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Performer, and of course Grammy award winning artist

this is her entire label

They better drag that irrelevant flop fad mediocre rapper who dragged Doja. :clap3:

Her management/label doesn't see it that way when they submit her music to pop and r&b categories. Her biggest songs to the GP are pop and r&b leaning songs.

People need to stop acting dumb to why this is debated. No one is debating that Doja can't rap. But a Cypher in 2014 does nothing for her in 2022.

This.  Future and Gunna at least sing over rap beats. Her music is pop/r&b, and you're lucky if she does more than one rap verse per song.  It's like saying TLC is a rap group b/c Left Eye came in during the bridge.

I agree the entire point of calling someone a mumble rapper implies they are not a real rapper :coffee2:

Just shows how dumbed down the expectations and the talent pool are,  when people see someone with multiple talents their brain fries :rip:

Yes they are, actually lol.

Most Doja fans have no issues with her being in Pop + R&B categories.  Because it’s not about genre, it’s about skill.  Rapping is a skill, Hip-Hop/R&B/Pop are genres.  The reality is that she does all three genres.  So at any given point in time, she’s gonna be in all three categories (just like “NTK” was nominated in a Rap category at the Grammys).

Dismissing her skill as a rapper is what most Doja fans take issue with.  People can’t seem to disconnect skill vs. genre.  Its frustrating b/c there are many “rappers” who aren’t as skilled as Doja but get a pass.  But she’s somehow disqualified from the conversation b/c she also does Pop.

Do Nicki, Cardi, or Meg somehow magically not become rappers when they’re featured on BTS, Little Mix, or Maroon 5 songs? No.  It’s STILL rapping, even if over a Pop beat.  This debate is so silly, lol.

So there’s a character/word limit when determining if someone is a rapper? :skull:  if that’s the case, why are Meg/Cardi/Nicki features on Pop songs still considered “rapping”?

And actually you kinda prove the point.  Left Eye herself was never questioned as a rapper, but she mostly ever rapped over Pop/R&B beats just like Doja.  So how is Left Eye a rapper, but Doja is not?

And also…the point of that is to show that she’s always been rapping since Day 1.  That’s really to speak to the folks who say she just “all of a sudden” became a rapper to compete with Meg/Cardi, etc.

And also, ppl on ATRL LOVE to compare Doja to Kesha/Fergie, when have either of them been in a cypher?    So I beg to differ, showing her cypher videos dispels the notion that she’s just trying rap to compete with the other girls, b/c she was always rapping.

She’s a rapper that can sing her own hooks without ghost singers or features. Any other take is wrong :bird:

Complex has little to no authority in hip hop, let alone female rap, but okay. “L.A.’s underground rap scene” literally sure :bibliahh:
