Dumb decision, but good news for Jessie Buckley who now rises up to first in Oscar predictions by default for Women Talking.

Why on Earth would she leave the relatively empty Best Supporting Actress race for Best Actress which already has two extremely strong contenders in Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh  makes no sense

 

I haven’t been following the Best Supporting Actress race much because I assumed Michelle Williams would win but looks like the next up in terms of odds are Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy

I have to assume that Williams herself pushed to be Lead which is dumb as rocks. I can't imagine the studio pushing her out of a category that she was locked for.

funnily enough, viola is the only example in the last 15 years of someone going lead despite being in under a third of her film:

 

Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom)  28.36%

Viola Davis (The Help) 31.60%

 

Fences was at 39% and is her most lead performance. But it is not the most egregious; for example, Alicia Vikander had 50%.

well that was silly because boseman is the main lead, with 17+ more minutes of screentime than viola.

Also this hurts Michelle Williams more unless her role is like Patricia Arquette in Boyhood which could be placed in either lead or supporting.

Well, some people do say that a lead actor/actress nomination is more beneficial to one's career than a supporting win, and (White) Michelle is still at an age where she can lead projects, so I do see why she'd want a boost of her leading lady status.

 

I even think she could be competitive for the win.

Yeah it won't be the cakewalk that it would've been in Best Supporting Actress, but she will be in presumably the Best Picture winner, she has an overdue narrative and her role is baity af reportedly. I can see her pull it off.

By the way I really doubt Michelle made that choice. Usually actresses/actors run to Supporting to get an easier win (Viola, Patricia, Alicia Vikander, Brad Pitt) not the other way around.

It will be a mess if Queen Williams were placed in Lead Actress category for the whole season but on Oscar nomination morning, she's placed in Supporting category
