I’ve always admired how The Last Of Us doesn't play to casual tropes. It is not a game about zombies; Ellie and Joel just so happen to live in a world with zombies. In fact, the infected aspect is rather tertiary to the narrative’s main themes. It’s a game about survival and what you would do for it. In some ways, I actually find the narrative to have less flaws than its successor, however, the narrative doesn’t take many risks itself until the very end. It’s a rather linear story of getting from Point A to Point B, with Joel playing the role of an Amazon Delivery Driver. Regardless, Naughty Dog tells it in such a masterful way that you have to admire the narrative's understated simplicity. However, the narrative does a full 180° at the end of the game, leaving us with a moral dilemma that triggers a series of events that occur in its successor. The Last Of Us is truly a cornerstone in gaming and story-telling, with the narrative's stakes further heightened by its successor and its complimentary DLC, Left Behind.
