Working definition

A SARS-CoV-2 variant :

  • with genetic changes that are predicted or known to affect virus characteristics such as transmissibility, disease severity, immune escape, diagnostic or therapeutic escape; AND
  • Identified to cause significant community transmission or multiple COVID-19 clusters, in multiple countries with increasing relative prevalence alongside increasing number of cases over time, or other apparent epidemiological impacts to suggest an emerging risk to global public health.

How serious is the pneumonia outbreak?

According to Wuhan’s health bureau, 59 patients have been diagnosed with the virus, including seven in critical condition as of Sunday. Some of the patients operated stalls at the seafood market. All of the patients are in quarantine, and 163 people who had been in close contact with them have been placed under medical observation. The World Health Organization says symptoms include fever and difficulty breathing.

How fast is it spreading?

The first case was discovered in Wuhan on Dec. 12, the city’s health bureau says. On Monday, authorities in Hong Kong reported that six more patients were found to have fever or respiratory symptoms after returning from Wuhan, bringing the number of cases in the city to 30.

Aww the old thread was so iconic, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. It had some insane and intense moments :rip:

A cute and light-hearted video on COVID antibodies featuring Thai celebrities. (Also posted in the BL drama base thread.) In Thailand, having four shots is the norm, it seems. (They had to rely on Sinovac/Sinopharm/AZ in the beginning.)

Bonus: Jumpol Adulkittip0rn's cute face and his reactions to needles.

It's going to take at least another month to get back to zero :skull: I don't think the people in Shanghai are going to bear that long

i wonder how they are gonna do with the "permanent COVID positive" cases there :cm:

Summary:

  • Only confirmation from isolation centre can be considered as proof for recovery. No self-testing is allowed and no test will be offered to people who refuse to go to "isolation centre".
  • If a person refuses to go to "isolation centre" even test results are negative, that person will be considered as POSITIVE case permanently and the health code will forever be shown as POSITIVE
  • The whole community / residential area will be locked down if any one of the resident refuses to go to "isolation centre"

Those who received the Sinovac vaccine were 4.59 times more likely to have severe COVID-19 compared to those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. They were also 2.37 times more likely to be infected, compared to those who took the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The findings also suggest that the Moderna vaccine is more effective at preventing severe disease than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Those who took the Moderna were found to be less than half (0.42) times as likely to develop severe COVID-19 than Pfizer-BioNTech recipients, and they are also less likely to be infected.

Citing a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the higher effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine was likely because of the higher mRNA content in the Moderna vaccine and longer time interval between the jabs.

Quote

A total of 107,220 of those vaccinated were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to have COVID-19 over the study period, and 644 developed severe disease.

While the study was based on “comprehensive national data”, the team said there were “several limitations”.

This included the “residual confounding” from comorbidities as well as factors that influence a person’s choice of vaccine or risk of exposure. There were also asymptomatic cases who did not see a doctor and were not recorded as cases.

My last post before the forum reset was on the Dept Head of UCSF saying for the U.S. to get mRNA boosters every 2 months until better boosters are developed for Omicron/BA2 and we get a higher Paxlovid supply. I'd try it if the pharmacy allowed it but they've been strict with attempts from friends I know :coffee2:

Also Chise already clarified that XE is NOT a new VOC. Of course it's still worth posting about and monitoring, but it's important to clarify that.
