ClashAndBurn Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Just now, shelven said: AOC's clearly doing a way better job at ingratiating herself into the good graces of Dem party leadership than Bernie ever did. The Democratic party is insecure more than anything else and the main thing that they didn't like was how Bernie criticized the party and came across as knowing better than them (which was true! But that's beside the point). If she spends the next 10-15 years doing what she's already started doing over the last few years, she's very unlikely to face the same party obstacles that Bernie faced. The fact that she was ever even associated with Bernie taints her in the eyes of the political establishment, and her sucking up to Pelosi doesn't really erase that. Her voting present for the Iron Dome also didn't really please anyone either. It was still seen as just as much of a no vote by Israel supporters, and it only served to make her look like she was caving to establishment pressure to anyone else. Joe Crowley was a likely successor to Pelosi and dethroning establishment fixtures like him through a primary rather than "waiting your turn" is basically an unforgivable sin in the Democratic Party. Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman were also notable for dethroning establishment powerhouses like Lacy Clay and Elliott Engel in much the same way that they were taken out in revenge by their AIPAC-funded opponents. 1

Communion Posted August 20 Posted August 20 8 minutes ago, Relampago. said: As unfortunate as it is, I don't quite yet believe she's given up on her core beliefs and values. She's playing a game, and while I hate the game and I wish she would've stuck to her old rhetoric because this progressive-in-disguise method does make me cringe considering what she used to say. But I do have to commend her for (hopefully) playing the long game and getting into the good graces of the party elites to hopefully move the party left, rather than get snatched up like Cori Bush did. And that's not a slight to Bush either, it would just be devastating to see all the Squad members get toppled by AIPAC money one by one. Will AOC's method actually be effective in the long term? History shows us no, they usually just become indistinguishable from other run-of-the-mill Dems, but nonetheless I hope she's different. I mean, the issue is that her theory of change changed (changing around 2020) yet has already largely been proven wrong. Her votes, to her credit, have remained largely the same. Yet her idea of ingratiating herself in the party has ultimately seen those professed goals become less likely. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gPBdBrqVCbtuy7f1bjOdCDUzEv5RqbbU1yYAr3KoHYE/edit?gid=1289123714#gid=1289123714 This is why incantations like this: 15 minutes ago, Sannie said: She understands and plays the game are just that. Incantations. Word-speak. Suggesting gametheory is at play suggests AOC's desired goals have come closer into picture through strategic movements. But they haven't. They're further away than before she even entered office. AOC has transformed from someone hoping to actually implement progressive policy by shifting the Overton window to being okay with being the most progressive voice to a party that just objectively doesn't pass progressive policy. Her rhetorical loyalty to Dems has seen M4A abandoned, the public option dropped, and less people guaranteed healthcare than before she entered office. No matter what anyone's feelings of Sanders are now, his insurgency and tension with the Democratic party has proven the only meaningful action to move progressive politics forward in the entire 2010s. Any attempts to work within the system have - objectively - failed. 4
