Mmmm, the DNC will sooner put their thumb on the scale for Josh Shapiro to take it by bringing superdelegates back than allow that to ever happen. ย I just don't know how you can see how the Democrats reacted to Bernie with nothing other than the purest contempt and revulsion and could come to any other conclusion than that they have a compulsive need to make progressives feel unwelcome.

She's playing a game, and while I hate the game and I wish she would've stuck to her old rhetoric because this progressive-in-disguise method does make me cringe considering what she used to say. ย But I do have to commend her for (hopefully) playing the long game and getting into the good graces of the party elites to hopefully move the party left, rather than get snatched up like Cori Bush did. ย And that's not a slight to Bush either, it would just be devastating to see all the Squad members get toppled by AIPAC money one by one. Will AOC's method actually be effective in the long term? History shows us no, they usually just become indistinguishable from other run-of-the-mill Dems, but nonetheless I hope she's different.ย

AOC's clearly doing a way better job at ingratiating herself into the good graces of Dem party leadership than Bernie ever did. The Democratic party is insecure more than anything else and the main thing that they didn't like was how Bernie criticized the party and came across as knowing better than them (which was true! But that's beside the point). If she spends the next 10-15 years doing what she's already started doing over the last few years, she's very unlikely to face the same party obstacles that Bernie faced. 5

The Republican Party was basically dying out with young people all leaving for Democrats but they turned that around in just 7 years which is insane. ย WSJ does a good job pointing out how Democrats focus on issues that mainly affect women, but it's pretty apparent that the cultural conversations that have been happening in the last decade really affected young people's mentality across the board. From Me Too to the Andrew Tates popping up, there's just a lot of gendered conversations going on and a desire to "retain masculinity" in a way. ย I don't even know where to go with that, or how one even begins to start unraveling that mess, but it's not something to ignore. I can only hope that this trend begins to die quickly once Trump is gone but I doubt it. In most circumstances I think Republicans can really only plateau around 50% with young men simply because of the electorate demographics of Gen Z ย But that said, even in 2022 midterms Republicans didn't make inroads compared to 2020 with young men. Biden was just extremely unpopular as a candidate this yearย He would have lost ground across many key demographics. ย Young Black men also have the lowest turnout of all young voters, which would influence the young men vote margins more to the left. Quote Nearly six in ten (57%) young Latino men voted for a Democrat for the U.S. House. Even young white men, who had been the subgroup most likely to vote GOP, this time preferred Democrats by a slim margin (49% voted for a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, compared to 45% who voted for a Republican candidate). Data for young Black men was not available. https://circle.tufts.edu/latest-research/youth-are-not-monolith-how-different-young-people-voted-2022 1
