Brando Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I don't understand why nobody would release a smash-worthy song. Surely someone at their labels must have seen this coming. I kept saying that there were no big hits on the horizon since November

Marco_g2 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 First of all: i love Heat Waves and it topping the BBH100 is deserved. It doesnt feel like the #1 song right now tho but its definitely a juggernaut hit However, 2022 is shaping up to be a completely hit-less year? There's no new smashes at all. There's something strange going on and you cant blame the pandemic because we've had countless of hits during 2020 and 2021. In fact a lot of them are so big theyre still in the top10 right now ?
Literature Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 folklore would've had 7/10 spots in the top 10 if it was released right now and the entire top 3

It's covid and the rule changes in 2020. Covid made radios replay the same songs over and over again and caused streaming numbers for the top songs to plummet, instead spreading them out over whole catalogs. And the rule changes to UGC (user generated content) in early 2020 which removed streams from platforms such as tiktok cut off a big source of points from the hot 100. Old town road got 130M+ streams every week when counting UGC.
Green Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Dua/Megan and Harry are coming this month. Let's see if they can shake the charts

The streaming numbers didnt recover to what it was before pandemic i still remember Shallow barely making it to top10 Streaming Songs with 27M or something People are consuming older music a lot more now than ever. I recently read a report that mentioned older music had out-streamed new music in 2021.

OnlyManInTheWorld Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 This must be the weakest top10 in history?

PurrKaty Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Bad Habits at 24 weeks and Shivers at 18 weeks in the top 10 is very impressive. I wonder if there any other potential hits left on his album. Also Cold Heart has so much potential in the US but radio has been dropping it. I was thinking it could pull a Levitating and get a second wind on radio, but with the new Megan/Dua collab coming I’m guessing they want to make room for that. Still, very good run for CH

Back catalogues are growing in streams massively which is why labels are buying older artists masters. Bohemian Rhapsody has 2.4 Billion streams on Spotify and Artic Monkeys 2013 album is still one of the top streamed albums daily… labels desperately need to stop investing in singles and actually building their talent pools again.
Blue Skies Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 Hate that song and almost every other song in the top 10.
KatyPrismSpirit Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 i remember this was some underground flop song in 2020 shook
Mr. Duff Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 Ed is doing great Bad Habits longevity is amazing! I prefer Shivers so I hope it can stay more in the top ten. He should have pushed Overpass Graffiti next over TJATQ, it could have been a nice top ten a la Photograph. Stay eclipsing Easy on Me This is like Hello and Sorry all over again. Biebs definitely has longevity on his side! And he’s smashing with Ghost too! Very impressive. I wish Light Switch could go top ten.

And this is why artists like Drake and Taylor could easily end as the top 2 artists of the decade (again) even if they don't get a smash studio album anymore because their massive catalog music (they have like 8 albums charting weekly on the Billboard 200 )

Imagine ATRL members following the Hot 100 in 2002-2004 when the Hot 100 = %100 Radio I guess the most exciting movements those years were when Kelly, Clay, Fantasia released their physical singles #1's The rest was basically following the mediabase radio charts
