Just use a phone app. It's literally more efficient and less annoying. This is why, to me, the Metaverse just feels like contrived innovation that doesn't solve a single problem. :rip:

Agreed. The Metaverse as pitched by Mark is a deceptive pipedream.

The tech featured in this video isn’t new at all, I’ve used it before, including full-body thermal scanning that projected “you” into a shopping environment & the company I currently work for uses this VR tech currently, to run training modules for instore support team members.

Things like that, entertainment & video gaming are were VR will find success.

But technology as a whole, is more likely to continue its shift toward integration with our physical world, architecture, furniture - eg. projected holograms, touch technology, smart watches & homes etc. That’s ultimately what will be accepted & adopted on mass, as opposed to the idea that people will throw on a headset or enter a chamber to access some other virtual reality, in favour of the real world.

The only way that’d fly is if something so devastating happens to our planet that the physical world is no longer safe or viable to experience (climate change or war) & a digital replica must be cultivated.

Not all innovation takes off. Look at motion control gaming. They had their cute moment with the Wii and the Kinect got some steam at first during that hay day. But, people grew tired of its novelty and the second generation of the Kinect was a complete flop and the Wii U was a disastrous product that almost destroyed Nintendo's profitability. AR and VR have been products companies have tried to popularize for decades (e.g., look at Nintendo's Virtual Boy from the 90s). Just because technology can be done does not guarantee that it will be successful. The most successful technologies take off because they actually solve/satisfy a preexisting problem.

Tea, as Steve Jobs once said,

"You've got to start with the customer experience and work backward to the technology. You can't start with the technology then try to figure out where to sell it."

The worst gimmicks in the tech industry have always come from trying to shoehorn new technology to solve problems rather than considering if it is a natural fit. When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
