It's understandable. There's more people in the world now, and markets that mostly weren't consuming music legally in 1999 are now thanks to streaming.

Very this. I remember people moaning and groaning about streaming counting towards charts but its the future.

Yes and no. 

 

If you are independent than more money for you. Artist in the late 90s were only making like 10 cents an album sold or something like that and had crappy deals. 

 

They could sell 2 million albums and only make $200,000.

Consumption growth doesn't equal revenue growth. 

Music revenues are down over 50 percent since 1999 (probably, a lot more if these figures get adjusted for inflation).
