We already declared Taylor Swift’s Folklore to be the Best Album of 2020. But until now, we had yet to hear from the numbers. Now, the numbers have spoken, the data has assembled into integers and decimal points, and the answer is in: Folklore is the biggest album of 2020, too.

Swift’s eighth studio album, which is one of two full-lengths she dropped in 2020, takes the Number One spot on Rolling Stone‘s Year-End Top 200 Albums Chart. In 2020, Folklore pulled in close to 2.3 million album-equivalent units. (...)

Overall, Swift has five albums on the year-end RS 200, with Lover coming in at Number 28 and Evermore at Number 63 despite being released in early December. 1989 and Reputation take Numbers 116 and 165, respectively.

Not surprised, it is in fact the biggest album of 2020 :clap3:

But can we get a main thread for RS YE lists with all the positions?

As per today's hitsdd:

Quote

... total album sales in all formats were down 9.2% to 102m.

OK, this is mixing up RS and Buzzangle data, but, assuming that Red, Fearless, Speak Now and TS have accumulated 600k sales between them, it would appear that roughly 1 out of every 20 albums sold in the US in 2020 was Taylor's. I think this is unprecedented domination - the Beatles have had multiple years with over 5% marketshare of the US album market and it's possible that in 1987 MJ managed it too, but I can't think of anybody else who might have had an year this huge. Any suggestions?

They're definitely not including pre-release numbers based on the figures for Dua & Gaga.

If she didn't release so close to the year's end, she might have managed it, but as it stands, 25 did (at the most generous estimation) 8 million, 21 added another 1.6 million and 19 - 700k, but out of a total market of 241 million, her marketshare was approximately 4.3%. Still very impressive, but album sales were not as moribund in 2015.
