ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 13, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2020 Quote diamond life was the one that got me into them but honestly i think they're just really consistent. like i could listen to any of their albums and stan. also stan dolphin noises! i still need to get into their discography properly. i only listened to diamond life and lovers rock and i was not so much into the latter. --- i actually don't like roisin at all i have not listened to her album though! LOVE sugar on the rim

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 14, 2020 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 14, 2020 40. too free - elastic genre: nu disco, art pop for fans of: hercules and love affair honestly? this entire album (which will do fairly well xoxo) sounds like, if hercules and love affair took blind featuring anohni as their template for everything else they did. so yeah, if you like that song, you will like this song, and possibly the whole album. the vocalist does sound a little like anohni. like, anohni lite, which probably is unimpressive to fans of her, but to those of us who have mixed emotions on her vocals, its just fine. its super catchy and i like the percussion on it a whole bunch. 39. charli xcx - anthems genre: bubblegum bass for fans of: y2k revival i remember her teasing the main instrumental hook on this album and immediately thinking "yes i will stan this one more than the other." close, but not quite. its a super fast paced sugar rush. but what makes the song special is that, well, its pandemic-specific lyrics. she wants bops to free herself from boredom in the pandemic. relatable enough, thankfully many artists including charli herself obliged. 38. lynks - i dont know what i want genre: new wave for fans of: soft cell, b52s i already explained his appeal in the eps list, where he was third place. this is just his best offering, a bouncy new wave anthem that would not sound out of place with the early 80s synth pop scene. its about, well, not knowing what you want. its funny and really charismatic. the breakdown (?) near the end adds to the songs comedic charm, but really, the "i dont know what i want" hook repeated over with that childish sounding synth line is the song's biggest strength. 37. allie x - super duper party people genre: dance pop for fans of: kesha yeah, if you have any nostalgia for the early kesha era, uffie, etc. this song is for you people. allie is talk singing about a fairly interesting party and all the different personalities at it. this seems to be basically the albums only "uptempo" (barely...), and so for those of us who enjoyed her last few EP, it was its saving grace. yeah, its really fun to sing along to the almost cringe but not quite lyrics, and you get your fair share of *mwah* voiced sound effects. 36. slayyyter - self destruct genre: dance pop, hip pop, industrial? for fans of: 100 gecs okay, i have NO IDEA whats up with the genres on rateyourmusic for this. metal? METAL? anyway. so, if you heard slayyyters mixtape last year, you will obviously notice a huge difference between self destruct and the tracks on that mixtape. what caused the change? well, its kind of obvious. i ****ing love the change in sound though. the maneater type lyrics never sounded better on her, and we get a shouted chorus 35. yukika - soul lady genre: city pop revival, kpop for fans of: city pop, lady by yubin yeah, we at the best of section stan yukika don't we? this was my pick from her stellar debut album. actually, my favorite might be cherries jubiles, but that was from another year. it was really hard to pick a single standout because of how consistent this album is from front to back! but i ended up going with this song because of the sing-along chorus that gives me a feeling of nostalgia. its got that amazing city pop feeling with gorgeous synths and a nice horn section carrying it. 34. sevdaliza - wallflower genre: trip hop for fans of: massive attack i was always a fan of sevdaliza, even if a hesitant one, but she sold me completely with this new era. it had her doing a ton of new and interesting sounds and succeeding at literally all of them. on wallflower, she summons the gods of 90s trip hop to make a gorgeous track that would make portishead proud. 33. poppy - dont go outside genre: pop metal, art pop for fans of: honestly, you have to be into other poppy songs to appreciate this one. the outro of i disagree is a brooding 60s style dark ballad, and actually has a double-meaning in the pandemic era, but while the brooding ballad is effective its kicked into high gear when it all of a sudden becomes a medley for all the singles on the album. the song itself switches from half time to full time without missin ga beat, too. its a reward worth the wait, a completely perfect closer for the album, and just all around a good listening experience. like i said though, i dont know if this is the best introduction to poppy so if you have not gotten into her new era/album, i would suggest concrete/bloodmoney/anything like me. 32. cindy - never let me go genre: dream pop, synth pop, hypnagogic pop for fans of: any chromatics-adjacent project yeah, this is a super memorable synthy hypnagogic dream pop song. the album has a lot of great sounds but the simple "look at me right now x2 / never let me go x2" is the most satisfying moment on the album for me. its got that nice dancing in your bedroom while youre still kind of sad feel to it. 31. lou hayter - my baby just cares for me genre: hypnagogic pop, synth funk for fans of: um, the chromatics [2] sometimes when im making these lists, it seems like similar songs always get put next to each other. this is another dreamy bedroom pop style synth song, but this time, its not sad and desolate, its downright sexy and alluring. i know she made the rounds with the song cherry on top, which was underrated, but this song is wildly better. its just more to my tastes and my liking. i kinda phoned it in with the comparison to chromatics but yeah idk. its hard for me to pin down who this song is for, besides me of course. she was apparently in the new young pony club, which is pretty surprising since they're old news at this point. well, please listen to this bop.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 14, 2020 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 14, 2020 this update has a lot of unknowns, please listen to the songs if you do, i promise ill listen to any song of your choosing on your list.

BlackoutZone Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Soul Lady of course flawless. Super Duper Party People is such an odd choice to me, this song is literally an opposite of what the rest of the album reflects on, it also indeed stands out sound-wise in the worst way possible and it's not like it's reminiscent of her past EPs either! But to each their own! Also didn't like Self Destruct at all, but I've heard her album and she has better gems waiting there (sadly nothing Alone-level)

Ewan Chaos Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Previous update: Murphy's Law yeah it's like my #2 favorite Roisin song ever now. Which is funny because it actually had to grow on me (idk why, maybe the voice processing thing). My Hair is 100% my favorite from Positions. I still give it lots of spins. The Guilty Conscience/Post comparison sdnskshkds **** maybe I should listen to Post too now. I can't BELIEVE that people still think/thought upon release that Sugar on the Rim is a "filler"........ Hayley said this song is for the GAYS and that's IT. My favorite bit from Sugar is the belting at the end of the second and third choruses. I think Pure Love just barely is above Sugar for Part III songs but... idk I see Sugar overtaking it. This update: Yeah Charli easily made the best pandemic-related bit of content and Anthems (and c2.0) is the true testament to that. Allie trash, but I think that song was my #2 from the album, so. Soul Lady Cherry Jubilees is actually my favorite too and I didn't listen to Yukika until this year so I can claim it as my #1 pick from the album this year tee hee. Oh also since I think you asked I'm not gonna do a top songs list, this was hard enough for albums nnn. Doing standalone songs so I could highlight non-album songs was enough for me.
