Why is the US rejecting Maluma?

Recommended Posts

rta1913

I know Maluma currently has a solo Spanish song at #55 (Hawai) and he has previously charted in the BB Hot 100 at:

#28 - Arms Around You (XXXTentacion & Lil Pump f/ Maluma and Swae Lee)

#48 - Felices los 4

#51 - Chantaje (Shakira f/ Maluma)

#87 - Corazon f/ Nego do Borel

#96 - HP

But when it comes to albums, his peers are faring much better (highlighted in Green are their best performing albums, Balvin has two as Colores was a joint album):

Artist Album BB200 Peak FW SPS Release Year
Maluma F.A.M.E. #37 15,000 2018
11:11 #30 17,000 2019
Papi Juancho #38 16,000 2020
Ozuna Odisea #22 18,000 2017
Aura #7 49,000 2018
Nibiru #41 17,000 2019
Enoc #17 ~ 22,000 2020
J Balvin Energia #38 12,000 2016
Vibras #15 22,000 2018
Oasis #9 36,000 2019
Colores * #15 24,000 2020
Anuel AA Real Hasta La Muerte ** #42 13,000 2018
Emmanuel #8 39,000 2020
Bad Bunny X 100PRE #11 30,000 2018
Oasis #9 36,000 2019
YHLQMDLG #2 179,000 2020
Las Que No Iban A Salir *** #7 42,000 2020

* Colores debuted on a Thursday, so technically these are his "second" week numbers. However while it debuted in the Top Latin Albums charts, it did not do so in the Billboard 200. The one day numbers were approximately ~2,000.

** This is his second week numbers. It debuted one week earlier at #44 with 11,000, however that was barely two days in the tracking week. This album was released after he was released from jail. No wonder he is homophobic trash and friends with the Six Nine PDF file.

*** This was released in a Sunday, so it debuted with numbers from less than 5 days of the tracking week.

As you can see, all of them have at least one top 10 album (at least top 15 if you want to consider only solo albums), except Maluma. He does not even have a top 20 album.

Why is that?

Is he just a pretty face?

Is he a quick little singles artist?

He is also one of the artist with the most high profile collabs with English speaking artists, after J Balvin.

The timing of this thread is a mess considering Hawai keeps rising on the Hot 100, up to #55 this week

Well I did state that he has charted successfully in the BB Hot 100, but looks like the GP is not interested in his albums as a body of work, unlike some of the other reggaetoneros, looking at the albums'' performance

Good looks and taking your shirt off on a daily basis is only gonna get you so far. Austin Mahone and Cody Simpson also thought they could be the new Bieber by posing shirtless all the time. Now they are nothing more than glorified Instagram starlets.

Maluma at least as the Latin market to fall back on. No one expected him to become the next Ricky Martin or the male Shakira.

Technically all of them are reggaetón artists which include singing and rapping. Maluma has as many trap songs as Bad Bunny but I guess you can say the GP sees Maluma as more pop due to his collabs.

The thing is... he had the potential to become them. He has the looks and the pop crossover appeal the others not.

You may be right. His highest peaking album and best first week sales come from the Madonna-assisted album, maybe he had made a video for Soltera, his new one would’ve charted higher :fan:

So is Maluma. Atleast he tries to be.

OT: I've said it for years. Take away the looks and he has minimal talent. He's basically all eye candy.

I wouldn't go to say he's a skilled rapper, but he makes bops.

But he out toured them easily in the US (tied with bad bunny).

He’s a tour artist.

Colores had like 10 singles and they ALL failed to debut at the hot 100 :rip:

The delusion. Maluma sings better than all of them, he co-writes his songs and he’s good LIVE (very good performer on tour).

Is he a singer or a rapper? I'm pretty sure he "raps" or at least tries to. In that case, he's not that great.

I do think he serves looks and bops. But I don't think he's one of the best of the crop. We have better reggaeton talents who write their own music and are by far way more lyrical.

he needs to release English version so he can blow up like Shakira did

but anyways, Maluma is coming for Oscars next year when Marry Me gets released

Maluma’s not a rapper :toofunny2: who are those reggaeton artists with better lyrics?

Bad Bunny is stomping too hard. Anything Maluma does will look like a flop by comparison. In actuality he’s doing very well.
