Will Mariah's Xmas become longest running #1 ?

Featured Replies

So.. it's september and the year is ugly anyway.

So it is the perfect moment to talk about Mariah's iconic All I Want For Xmas is Di... You

The song spent 4 weeks at #1 in 2019/2020.

My question: By the end of this decade, any chance that Mariah will extend these 4 weeks to 20 weeks and beat the record again?

She would need to stay at #1 about 1-2 weeks each year.

The song and streaming dominate every Christmas, do you see any chance?

Wouldn't that be super iconic?

It's possible. I feel like it's becoming more of a classic every passing year. It is a modern Xmas classic. Mariah really did that. It's IMPRESSIVE bcuz it's like the ONLY modern Xmas classic out there. I mean other Xmas classics are way way older and belong to previous generations. Her song was released in the 90s.

I hope Santa Tell Me follows suit in a few years.

It’ll probably be surpassed. Streaming has helped Christmas songs so don’t be surprised if we see more #1s as the years go by

I don't think so. I see many artists releasing Christmas songs in the upcoming years.

I might break the top 10 record for sure.

They pushed for it last year for its 25th anniversary so I'll wait to see how it performs this year before saying anything but I sure hope it will !

AIWFCIY keeps getting stronger each year so I think so. And as long as there's no big releases during the xmas period. It'd be pretty iconic for Mariah to snatch back her record without even trying

Nah, Billboard will eventually change their rules and block her in some way.

This. They pulled out ALL the stops (bundles, promo tour, re-releases, new music video).

However, the song went #1 before all the stunts which means it was able to do so based on streaming and airplay alone. With the way the song keeps growing every year, I wouldn't be shocked if it managed to go back to #1 even earlier than last year (for reference, it's already doing 100K-300K daily streams on Spotify).

*3 weeks sis. Anyway yes coming for 100++ weeks at #1 before she dies :rip:

Yeah and the songs aren’t that strong now. WAP and Dynamite might loose some points till xmas starts.

I hope so but I won't be surprised if one day Billboard will make rule changes blocking it from topping the charts again

Most probably it will unless there's new xmas hit song released and become classic xmas anthem. No other past releases manage to dethrone AIWFCIY anyway.

That’s what I think, too.

Yep, #1 for two weeks without any of the stunts (and still would have been Xmas week without those points too).

Brenda Lee was #2 last year, she just needs to do some promo and she could get the #1 for a week. Lord knows Mariah won't share that spot.

It would be cute if holiday songs had a pop cultural revival and more labels craving that holiday coin, get their artists to pen some more modern classics. We certainly don't need anymore holiday compilation cover albums. :dancehall2:

Yeah something like it can only chart on the holiday songs chart or reducing its points because it's already been out for so long, pathetic tbh.

I hope this happens. The oldies are classics, sure, but more modern and original Christmas songs are always welcomed. I hope with the resurgence of Christmas music and their outright chart dominance in December, more artists will be incentivized to release their own Christmas songs.

OT: I don't see AIWFCIY going anywhere anytime soon so I think (and hope, cause it low-key deserves) it will manage to become the longest running #1, as long as Billboard doesn't somehow block Christmas music from charting (which they shouldn't).

No. Christmas songs had a lot of UGC streams that will not exist this Christmas, not to mention the promo isn't there this year (and won't be for any year.) Will AIWFCIY go #1 again at some point? Yes. But not 3 weeks every year... plus, even by the time Mariah breaks OTR's streak, I almost guarantee another song will break the record.
