Gangnam Style is a remembered smash hit despite peaking at #2. I doubt the most recent Asian song to top this chart will have the same impact overall.

I think the tweet is refering to actual Asian artists as in from the continent. I saw the Weeknd quote the tweet btw

This is not true - Freddie Mercury, Far East Movement, Jay Sean and Zayn are all Asian and have had #1s since 1963.

Congrats to BTS but they could have worded this better  we've had South Asians and even East Asians top the charts in the last decade. Of course it would be difficult for an Asia-based act to top the American charts lol. 

It makes me wonder how well Gangnam Style would've done on the charts if YouTube and streaming were the factors they are today. The multiweek #1 smash that that could've had.

They're of Asian origin, but not Asian acts. And if we're including Zayn Malik, we'd have to include Enrique Iglesias and Bruno Mars also.

By the way, if we're including western people with Asian origins, there's also Yvonne Elliman.

 

She had Hot 100 #1 with "If I Can't Have You" from Saturday Night Fever in 1978:
