So I saw this post that covered the girl groups Spotify streams, and I wanted to create one that is SOLELY about male vocal groups (since many lists combine them with rock groups, bands, and other types of groups in general. I went on Wikipedia to see which boybands popped up through each generation, and then I looked up some other highly regarded vocal groups. I tried to cover them from several generations (as long as most of their prime was before streaming), and didn't want to just cover pop groups (hence the inclusion of R&B groups), and didn't want to just focus on North America (hence some European inclusions).

This is a really cool list first of all. Love the attention on vocal groups, many which actually have talented vocalist.

 

The Jackson 5 remain legendary of course, chnaging music history, influence generations and providing classics remembered decades after. And all those iconic SONGS tho like omg.

 

I have notice that R&B artist from the 90s seems to be very poor in overall streams. Like the ones who were literally the biggest names of the day and have such low streams or at least lower than id think. Boyz II Men were hands down the biggest chart force of the 90s after Mariah yet not even a billion streams? Smh even End of the Road streams seem underwhelming considering how classic of a song it is. In comparison, songs like My Girl 25 years prior to Boyz II Men even debuting has more streams than almost any of the songs on this list that arent by 2010s white boy bands. 

 

Also confirmed Backstreet Boys are bigger than NSYNC

A lot of their older stuff do not stream well, and I think it's due to the early 90s period in general having poor streams. Westlife has just been more consistent, and the late 90s/early 2000s are more streaming friendly.

I am positive that the Jonas Brothers are only that high due to their recent album. They would have been #7 over Boyz 2 Men, and behind The Temptations without it.

They have like 9 or 10 relevant albums in Europe. It shouldn't be surprising, and it isn't by that much. The NSYNC hits generally have more streams, but with a limited catalog, it's easy for a group like Westlife (whose hits have less streams, but more hits) to overpass them.

Yeah. I don't like it when they are grouped with rock bands, or legit bands, since results tend to be bias as heck.

 

It really is amazing how well The Jackson 5, and Motown groups in general did in streaming. At the same time, it is most likely due to people listening to a select few songs, and things get bolted up from there. I am sure it being Michael Jackson's group is heavily beneficial.

 

Not really shocked by the R&B groups. Many of them had hits that crossed over, but were not crossover artists at all, and their worldwide appeal was even worse. I am even more shocked with how poor NKOTB's streams are, especially since they had mania akin to The Beatles and Spice Girls back in the day, and they were worldwide.

Yeah I guess. Like you said the songs were big crossover hits at the time but not the actual performers. I think NKTOB's streams are so low because most vocal groups dont last long legacy wise (with very few exceptions). They may have rivaled the Madonna's and Michael's in their heyday but in terms of overall legacy of their catalogue... most people forgot about them by the end of the 90s i bet.

All of that does add up. If you have recency, a successful solo artist, or have several crossover hits that remain popular, most groups will suffer. Due to the artists not having much personal attachment to their songs, it makes their music a lot more microwavable. There is always very little reason for people to care about the groups, and the people in groups, compared to solo artists.
