Doja Cat's 'Say So,' Featuring Nicki Minaj, Tops Billboard Hot 100, Becoming Their First No. 1 Each

No. 1 in sales, top 3 in airplay & sales: "Say So" vaults from No. 16 to No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, up 966% to 66,000 downloads sold (a lower number than originally projected) in the week ending May 7, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Meanwhile, the song was on sale in a physical/digital combination offering during the tracking week. Consumers could purchase a vinyl single with a digital download; the download would be sent to consumers upon purchase, with the vinyl version due to arrive at a later date. "Say So" rises 3-2 on the Radio Songs chart, up 6% to 96.2 million audience impressions in the week ending May 10, and bounds 10-4 on Streaming Songs, up 87% to 30.3 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 7. (Unlike on the Hot 100, where streaming and sales for the Minaj remix of "Say So" contributed to a majority of the title's chart points in the tracking week, leading to Minaj being credited for the first time, approximately 90% of the song's radio airplay was for the original version, so Minaj is not credited as an artist on any airplay rankings.)

 

Minaj's record run to No. 1: While Doja Cat rules the Hot 100 with her third Hot 100 entry, Minaj leads with her 109th. That's the longest that a Hot 100-topping artist has had to wait for a first No. 1, blasting past Justin Bieber, who notched his first with his 47th entry, "What Do You Mean?," in 2015.

 

Women rule: Only six songs by solo women teaming up have topped the Hot 100. Here's an updated list:

Just as Doja Cat's "Say So" leaps following the addition of Minaj, "Savage" gains thanks in large part to Beyoncé's remix. "Savage" jumps 3-1 on Streaming Songs, up 53% to 42.1 million U.S. streams, becoming Megan Thee Stallion's first No. 1 on the chart and Beyoncé's third. On Digital Song Sales, "Savage" holds at No. 2, gaining by 90% to 50,000 sold. Similar to "Say So," "Savage" was on sale in physical/digital combination offerings during the tracking week, whereby consumers could purchase any of three vinyl singles with a download. "Savage" pushes 18-14 on Radio Songs, up 27% to 51.3 million in reach, and hits No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot Rap Songs chart, where Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé each earn their first leader.

 

The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" descends to No. 3 on the Hot 100, after four nonconsecutive weeks on top. It rules Radio Songs for a fifth frame, up 4% to 114.5 million audience impressions.

 

As for more Drake, he debuts at No. 7 on the Hot 100 with "Pain 1993," featuring Playboi Carti. It opens at No. 3 on Streaming Songs with 31 million first-week streams and No. 46 on Digital Song Sales with 3,000 sold. Drake achieves his 38th Hot 100 top 10, matching Madonna for the most in the chart's history. Madonna held the mark all to herself since November 2002, when "Die Another Day" became her 35th top 10, outpacing The Beatles' 34. Notably, all 38 of Madonna's top 10s have been in lead roles; due partly to the collaborative nature of hip-hop, Drake has posted 25 top 10s as a lead and 13 as a featured artist.

 

Post Malone's "Circles" is steady at No. 8 on the Hot 100, following its three-week command, as it logs a record-extending 36th week in the top 10.

 

DaBaby's "Rockstar," featuring Roddy Ricch, rebounds from No. 14 to No. 9 on the Hot 100, equaling its peak first set upon its debut two weeks ago. The collab keeps at No. 5 on Streaming Songs (28.3 million, up 17%) and hikes 13-7 on Digital Song Sales (9,000, up 36%), while gaining by 136% to 5.7 million in airplay audience.

Kenny Chesney Lands Ninth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Here and Now'

Notably, he ties Garth Brooks for the most No. 1s among country acts in the chart’s history. Among all artists, Chesney now has as many No. 1s as Brooks, Drake, Madonna, The Rolling Stones and Kanye West. Here and Now’s debut was largely powered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Chesney's upcoming tour. After Hours also had a ticket/album redemption offer in play with its first week (in addition to more than 80 merchandise/album bundle sales that helped drive sales).

 

Dark Lane Demo Tapes’ debut week was largely fueled by streaming activity. Of its 223,000-unit launch, 201,000 are in SEA units. That SEA sum equates to 269.1 million on-demand streams of the set’s songs -- making it the biggest streaming album of the week, by far; the third-largest streaming week of 2020; and the second-biggest debut streaming frame of the year. As for the rest of Dark Lane Demo Tapes’ first-week unit total, album sales comprise nearly 19,000, while TEA units total a little under 4,000. The only album with larger streaming weeks in 2020 than Dark Lane Demo Tapes is Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake, which launched with 400.4 million (March 21-dated chart) and then nabbed a second-week haul of 348.7 million (March 28) after the set was reissued with an array of bonus tracks in its second week of availability.

 

At No. 3 on the new Billboard 200, Lil Baby’s former No. 1 My Turn rises two rungs. The set is up 147 percent in units for the week, thanks to its reissue on May 1 with six additional tracks. Lil Baby continues the trend of R&B/hip-hop albums getting a reissue with bonus material soon after their release. Other titles that have gotten a reissue boost in 2020 include Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake and The Weeknd’s After Hours. Even NAV’s new Good Intentions, which was released on May 8, is slated to receive a deluxe reissue just two days later, on May 10.

 

Megan Thee Stallion’s Suga hits a new peak on the Billboard 200. Suga benefits from activity surrounding its hit single “Savage,” which got a boost on April 29 thanks to a new remix featuring Beyoncé. 

 

Doja Cat’s Hot Pink zooms to its first week in the top 10. Like Suga, Hot Pink is profiting from interest in its top 10-charting Hot 100 single “Say So” and a new remix. On May 1, a new version of the track boasting Nicki Minaj was released. Hot Pink reaches the top 10 in its 27th week on the chart, the longest climb to the region since Elton John’s hits set Diamonds took an 82-week stroll to the top 10 (reaching No. 7 on June 15, 2019).

Meg and Doja, only female albums in the BB200 top 10, and both female rappers. Pretty epic week for female rap, even with all the H100 drama

 

With Here and Now’s arrival at No. 1, Chesney ties Brooks for the most No. 1s on the Billboard 200 by a country act. Both have nine leaders. Ahead of them: The Beatles, with the all-time record of 19 No. 1 albums; Jay-Z, with 14; Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand, each with 11; and Eminem and Elvis Presley, each with 10.

All told, Here and Now is Chesney’s 16th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 -- and all have reached the top five. Since 2010, all eight of his charting albums have either debuted at Nos. 1 or 2.

Chesney’s last release, 2018’s Songs for the Saints, debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Aug. 11, 2018-dated chart with 77,000 units earned in its first week. It bowed behind Drake’s Scorpion, which was in its fifth and final week at No. 1 (after debuting on top), with 145,000 units.

I don't see his projections jumping to 120K. He releases the deluxe version of his 2019 album and he ended up doing 82K. His songs have already fallen on Apple Music/Spotify from yesterday when the first projections came out. People just aren't checking for his songs. At most, I see him doing 100-105K. Kehlani might end up doing 80-85K and Lil Durk might end up doing 65-70K. Bad Bunny might do the same range. 

 

Drake's songs are already rising back up on Apple Music. Last I checked, 12/14 songs off his mixtape were in the top 50 and they're rising fast. He might do just above 100K in his second week.
