There was no election this year, therefore no election single!

They use face-to-face meetings as promo, their albums include tickets that let you meet one member for a small timeslot/another ticket let’s you take a picture with them, etc. Some people have more than one favorite so you need to buy more than one album to see all your favorite members and/or see them more than once. Additionally the 16-ish members who feature in the “lead single” (The song that gets a public MV+performances) appear on the covers of the album, there’s about 3-5+ versions and anywhere from 1-4 of the girls are on each. Finally, there’s exclusive MVs for the b-sides on the album, which doubles as a DVD. Japan is very good at cracking down on piracy, so the easiest way to watch these MVs is by buying the CD.

Also they usually release a single seasonally (ie four a year: two regular singles, along with a single that lets fans decide the order and lineup of the next single, and then obviously that fan-decided single.). However this year, there was no fan-decided single, so instead of them being on single 3 in 9 months, this is only their second single since March. As a result there’s been less face-to-face opportunities, there’s a general concern that these opportunities will be scarcer in the future, AND fans have been able to save up more money, so everyone is cashing in now. This is AKB’s highest first week sale EVER on day 1, iirc.

Great explanation :clap3:

Just one important fact, the time for this fanmeeting is decided through a lottery system, which means that if you buy just one CD you won't be likely to get in the fanmeeting, which is why people buy multiple versions too

Asian Record labels are really schooling the West.

Put in the effort, take care of your fans & they will take care of you in return.
