#BurnItDown: K-Pop Industry Rocked By Abuse Scandals

Huge Scandal in Korea right now involving the K-Pop industry with members from huge boy groups, actors, business people and government officials. The following is an excellent summary courtesy of Reddit If you are a redditor who is lost, confused, or coming from r/all... Hello!

The story you are reading about has been developing since January 2019. It's rather complicated. It's kind of like a big fucking deal in South Korea at the moment as it affects the entertainment industry and the government.

.#BurningMolka

'Molka' is the term used in South Korea for images or videos taken surreptitiously, especially in a sexually exploitative way. (Spycams or hidden cameras placed in toilets, locker rooms, bedrooms, upskirt shots taken in public, videos taken during sexual encounters without consent, etc)

 TL;DR WRITTEN BY u/alleybetwixt and u/hubwub

•    Seungri (28) is the youngest member of the 5-member K-Pop group BIGBANG. The group's music agency is YG Entertainment. They are one of the most famous groups ever in South Korea.

•    The other four members of BIGBANG are currently completing their mandatory military service (19 months). Seungri has been active as a solo artist in the meantime. He is also expected to enlist on March 25th for his own military service.

•    Back in January (2019), it was reported that illegal activities were occuring at the club Burning Sun, which was co-owned by Seungri. These activities include: selling drugs, evading taxes, selecting inebriated women in attendance to be sent to VIP customers where they were assaulted/raped, drugging women for these purposes, and bribing local police to keep everything secret.

•    Seungri released a PR statement that he had nothing to do with day-to-day operations at Burning Sun.

•    Burning Sun was raided by the local police and shut down.

•    A journalist released Kakaotalk group chat logs (the WhatsApp of South Korea) between Seungri and multiple people who were unnamed at the time.

•    The chat logs indicated Seungri provided prostitutes to potential investors for one of his other businesses, aside from Burning Sun.

•    Seungri was then interrogated. The journalist released the full Kakaotalk group chat logs to a higher law enforcement agency, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (similar to the FBI in the United States).

•    Seungri was charged as a suspect for being an agent of prostitution (violating the Anti-Prostitution Law). Prostitiution is illegal in South Korea.

•    Seungri released a PR statement saying that he was retiring from the entertainment industry.

•    More news about the Kakaotalk chat room logs came forward regarding who else participated in the chats and what was discussed by the participants. The chats contain explicit and detailed conversations about assaulting women.

•    One of the people revealed to be in the Kakaotalk chat rooms is another singer and broadcaster by the name of Jung Joon Young.

•    In the past 24 hours, Jung Joon Young was arrested upon his arrival back from the USA at Incheon Airport for violating the Sexual Violence Punishment Act for illegally filming and distributing sexual videos. He wrote an apology letter admitting to the crimes.

•    Jung Joon Young's music agency, Make Us Entertainment, terminated his contract.

Here's a thread that summarizes the whole thing

TLDR: Top celbreties running prostitution ring, sharing illegally recorded sex cams, drug trafficking, bribing police ect.

New information since the last TL;DR:

•    Seungri was released from his contract by YG Entertainment.

•    Seungri and Jung Joon Young's cases were sent to the Supreme Prosecutors Office (similar to the Federal Court in the United States)

•    The focus of the investigation widened to encompass police corruption and related bribery. Chat messages indicate the Police Chief allowed participants to commit crimes and/or covered them up.

•    Another K-Pop artist, Choi Jong Hoon (29), the leader of a band called FT Island, was present in a chat related to a DUI he was arrested for back in February of 2016. At the time of his DUI, he didn't inform his agency, FNC Entertainment. With the release of messages, Choi Jong Hoon admitted to his DUI to them, and FNC Ent. announced he would be on hiatus from the band. Chat messages indicate the DUI was kept quiet by police.

•    Jung Joon Young also had his past brought back into the light. In 2016, he was accused of illegally filming a sexual encounter with a woman without consent, but the charges had been dropped. With the present investigation, it was discovered that police who had been investigating that case in 2016 went to the forensic company working on Jung Joon Young's phone, asking for them to announce that the phone's files could not be restored. The files were never turned over for further investigation.

•    With police corruption heavily woven into these cases (including high-ranked officers), all investigation was turned over to the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office. (The head of Central District helped to take down Park Geun Hye, South Korea's former President, who was impeached in December of 2016)

•    Yet another member of the chat, Yong Jun Hyung (29) of the K-Pop group HIGHLIGHT, posted on Instagram admitting to participation in a 1-on-1 chat where molka was shared, though he did not film or share any himself. He had initially denied participation. Yong Jun Hyung announced he would be leaving HIGHLIGHT.

•    FNC Entertainment followed-up on their announcement that Choi Jong Hoon would be on hiatus, to state that he would be leaving FT Island and retiring from the industry.

u/musicalpets also wrote a recap of what has happened on r/popheads.

Joon Young disappointing more than most.

To think that everyone has forgiven him the first time around (2016?).

He even promised on TV that he will never disgrace anyone.

:ace:

Seungri, tho. This is why you're the least likable among the Big Bang gurls.

Kissing You

This is deeply upsetting and I hope the perpetrators get what they deserve.

I've been reading rumors that some high profile members from top girl groups were drugged at that club (Burning Sun).

Hopefully they come out in force if they can.

A scandal so big that ended Big Bang their legacy, poor them.

Global Generation cements themselves as the most iconic K-Pop group, oh wow.

Very happy to know that those inhuman people are being exposed. Throw them in jail!

There's a high ranking cop who tried to get the data from Jon Young's first illegal tapping scandal deleted and when he couldn't get that done he had the case closed. And there's another cop or maybe the same one, who covered up a DUI for Jong Hoo. The fact that whole thing has deep roots that lead to a dead detective who tried to investigate **** years ago only to be killed and his death be written off as a suicide by shady ass cops is still shaking me to my core. This **** is way bigger than these idols, how deep this rabbit hole goes is :dancehall:
