Hi all!

So, we've been doing this thing ever since 2011 - The ATRL Critics Circle. (if Classic ATRL was working I could link you to the previous years' results!) Modeled after the year end critics awards that happen every November/December in filmland, the ATRLCC gives US a chance to have our say on what was really the "best of the best." [@supaspaz@Achilles. and my other day ones for that reference!] This year's voting will take place Wednesday, January 2nd, at 10PM EST/7PM PST.  Anyone can sign up in this thread to vote; we'll choose a select few and have a grand old time! The categories usually are:

Album

Single

Song (Lyrics/Music)

Track (for album tracks/b-sides ... NOT singles)

Male

Female

Group

Collaboration

Breakthrough Artist

Pop

R&B/Soul

Urban Alternative

Rap/Hip-Hop

Country

Rock

Alternative

Independent

Music Video

Producer

EP

Singles Run (the artist who's released the best overall singles this year)

We may add two new categories this year - Foreign Act (for all our Latin/K-Pop fans) and Songwriter (for the best non-performer songwriters in the business.) Let me know if we should!

Starting this thread now to chat amongst ourselves about ... what actually was released this year. We can FYC things, fight for our favorites, and also suggest albums/songs/artists that we may have missed throughout the past eleven months!

Let's get this thing started!

"The Distance" is just begging for collaboration runner-up, though.

Giving Me Life even more so!

Speaking of, did any men release anything of worth this year?

2018 only had few flawless, from top to bottom, albums but it had so many amazing tracks :jonny4:

2017 was the year of albums and 2018 the year of songs.

Anyhooz, I will post my list later but it will be something that I think will do well. My real list will be my Best Of.

I'll have more time to do this later today/tomorrow but I'll check back in. Overall I think 2018 was different to 2017 in that this year we had very few GREAT albums with a lot of good albums mixed in while, looking back, 2017 had both very few GREAT albums and less good albums overall :skull:

2017 did have way more standout singles though, while this year I don't think there's a very clear set of front runners. It'll be interesting to see people's singles lists in their Best Of's this year.

XXXTentacion and Tekashi 6ix9ine. You probably won't have a chance to honor them again anyway.

Tbh, most of my top 10 albums and singles are mostly women (:clap3:) this year but the men held it down too. I'll post examples later though.

I... want to say this is how I feel. Had more difficulty doing this than I thought I would. Kinda had a hard time deciding my #1 male artist this year. I also didn't really know what the difference  between Song and Track was but I put something down. On another note, I'm very surprised to see very little mention of Kali Uchis so far but I felt she had a pretty wonderful year.

I still haven't heard her album!

Great FYCs. Just some clarification onto how this works - so, we'll go into a chat together. We'll do each category round by round - you'll come with your top three, and we'll get to the consensus winner.

Eh I thought it was solid but it did take a couple of listens to sink in.

You should get on it!

Talent, style, originality (or as original as you can get at this point), diversity. She has it in spades and if she was given the same opportunities these new pop girls got, she'd put them to shame :'(

And got it.
