Loyalty goes along way, but you should also make amends with people you've had conflict with if you want to make it farther because if you want to put yourself in higher power, you need to be aligned with people who can help dominate the other alliances in the game. I think it was a wakeup call to whoever doesn't have an alliance. Before this point, you could kind of coast by without any connections or partnerships but after seeing how close those votes were, you would be foolish if you were going solo at this point.
