'Liberation' review: Christina Aguilera's intermittently great comeback

3 out of 4 stars

Blessed with one of the most enormous voices in pop, Christina Aguilera has struggled in the 19 years since her breakthrough smash “Genie in a Bottle” to find the right material and sound to fit the times and her personality. With “Liberation” (RCA), inspiration arrives in spurts — “Sick of Sittin’ “ sounds like a lost live Big Mama Thornton track from the late ‘60s, a burst of psychedelic soul full of chants and vamps and screeching electric guitars, and “Like I Do” is a super-modern ballad built on a flute-y synth riff and sexy lines like “we can Marvin Gaye and get it on” and “you’re so much better when you don’t speak.”

Aguilera sings impeccably on every style she assigns to herself, from the opening extrapolation of “Maria” from “West Side Story” (which turns into an R&B jam with a sample of Motown-era Michael Jackson), to the blow-the-house-down duet with Demi Lovato on “Fall In Line.” She manages the busy “Accelerate,” which required 13 songwriters, including Kanye West, and raps from both Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz, reasonably well, although she’s clearly more comfortable on the stripped-down ballad “Twice,” which contains just Aguilera, a piano and some backup vocals.

They hold Christina to such a high standard that it’s impossible for her to get an acclaimed album. But if it was Britney or Katy or any other girl releasing this type of music they’d be hailed to the Gods. Christina is just held to an impossible standard where she can’t win. Hopefully this album  changes that

Already bringing up Britney. How ****ing sad. But predictable. Is this era so uneventful that you guys always have to bring up Britney? We know the answer but damn you ya'll make it so easy.

Besides that, why do they have high standards? Even her magnum opus had a 55/100 score, like... But I don't care about reviews, they suck all the time.

Her debut, BTB, and KGB are all very well received. The others are mixed for the most part but for some of those the Grammy wins for them tell a better story.

The review itself sounds more like a 4/5 score for the general praise, but fair enough. It's good to see a review focussing on the music and concept of uer work instead of her persona/image which often is the case with Christina reviews.

I agree to some degree, but it doesn't apply to albums like Lotus. Other popstars wouldn't get praised to the Gods as well for those efforts. But I firmly believe due to her vocal talent she's automatically being held to a higher standard than most popstars, as pretty much always is the case among the big vocalists & I think it's safe to say more people appreciate her vocal talent, but the type of music just isn't for them and the talent is 'wasted' in their opinion.

Anything that's a 60/100 would be a triumph for Xtina tbh. Critics have never liked her.  :skull:

How many points will this get on meta critic?

It reads like a 75+ to me. Sites like the NY Times give scores to MC solely but don't post them on their site.
