Seriously, none of the girls of this generation is even close to what Rihanna has achieved in terms of chart success.

The list also proves how LOCAL females like Mariah Carey, Barbra and Janet are.

Honey, the UK doesn not even represent 0.5% of the world population.

Slow your rolls....

Mariah is above Britney, Tina Turner, Leona Lewis & Dido (who were all huge in the UK), so I am not sure what's you're talking about.

Also, to say that being #16 OF ALL TIME turn you into a flop is just.... "not smart" lol...

Especially when some of the people above her have 1 Million hits as feature artists and almost no REAL hit on their own (Nikki)

The Madonna people need to understand that the UK isn't Mariah's biggest market outside the US...

and that Queen Mariah is an albums seller (massively underceritied at that)

However in terms of albums certs she'd rank #10th (in the uk all time).

The BPI has an automatic cert system and next in line for re-cert for Mariah are: Rainbow and Butterfly (both will triple their current cert status).

Are these only including certified singles and albums? Because Adele, Beyoncé, and Gaga all have certified video albums in the UK for instance.

The numbers don't lie darlings.

what do you mean? Yes, it is a fact that the UK isn't Mariah's 2nd biggest market overall... it's only her biggest market in Europe...

And the list in the OP is only giving certified units. AIWFCIY has sold over 2 million copies in the UK as of January 2019... but it's only 3xP (1,8m certified)... Butterfly and Rainbow are only certified Gold but have cleared over 250k in the UK each.

Mariah was handed a certification in 2018 from the OCC for 17 million records sold in the country: 7,7 million albums 7,3 million singles. Mariah has sold more albums in Japan than records in the UK. Mariah's biggest market in Europe per capita is The Netherlands anyway.

I don't know what you are trying to prove with these numbers dahling.

The truth of the matter is that Mariah was never big anywhere in Europe, Latin America etc.. She barely had any No1s anywhere in Europe. Only 2 in the UK while other females have tons of No1s. Rihanna has like 11 No1s in the UK. RiRi might even pass Madonna at some point.

I didn't say that Mariah is a nobody in Europe. She's had some success. She definitely isn't as local as Janet Jackson was.

the wording is off. While HUGE might be a tad bit too much to reflect MC in Europe, her success was still OUTSTANDING. Maybe, instead of downgrading Mariah's success in language, we should think of a different term for Madonna especially (and probably Céline) as they are the absolute biggest selling female performers respectively. (Madonna takes the absolute crown bc she decimates Céline in singles sales in Europe).

The point I want to make is that "some success" cannot reflect the fact that Mariah Carey is the 5th best selling female albums act ever in Europe. YES, Madonna has sold more than twice as many albums in Europe (and singles) than Mariah... but pitting anyone against Madonna in Europe is suicidal. As I said before, Céline - albeit a MASSIVE albums seller - also doesn't come remotely close to Madonna's singles trajectory.

Nobody would say that Céline has had "some success" in Europe, but call it what it is, Céline had MASSIVE success in Europe.

Do you get what I mean?

Mariah's European success is quite strange when you think about it. She's only had 2 albums doing really well in all three BIG EU markets: GER, UK, FRA... and many albums which would "underperform" in one of them.

Example 1 Rainbow:

How on earth did this album sell over 400,000 copies in France and over 300,000 in Germany, but stalled at Gold in the UK?

Example 2 Merry Christmas:

How on earth did this album sell over 300k in the UK and GER, but isn't certified in France? (And how on earth did it sell more in Italy than in either UK and Germany?)

Example 3: Charmbracelet:

How on earth did it reach over 250k in France and over 120k in the UK and is not certified in Germany?

She's not as successful as Madonna or Celine but she's the fifth best selling female albums artist there. Her success just happens to be more of a slowburn in EU (she started off with some top 10s here and there, 1 million sellers, then hit her stride in the mid 90s via Music Box and Daydream, then slow decline via R&B Butterfly, an upswing via Ones, a frontloaded mess via Rainbow (if this had longevity, this wouldve sold more considering that it debuted high at the European charts), then she pretty much evened out in the 2000s, with TEOM serving decent numbers). As you can see, her R&B material never really translated to huge numbers while her pop/AC stuff pretty much turned her into a superstar in the continent. Considering that, Mariah was still selling solidly enough to get her pass almost 30 mill in the continent.

I havent mentioned Asia yet where she's literally the biggest selling female artist. Its probably the only continent (Africa is too vague to measure) where Madge didnt top due to Mariah's impressive run there.

As you can see, Mariah is not as global as Ms. Ciccone, she was hugely global in her own right as well, enough to get her to the 3rd rank. It just so happens that she's a monster seller that rivaled Madge in the States, that made it seemed as if Mariah was "local", since her huge intl receipts dont match with her incredibly massive US receipts.

As for Janet, her material was mostly R&B. It does not really translate to huge global receipts hence why she seems local. It speaks a lot when her biggest global hit is literally a Eurodance inspired bop. And yea she was indeed overshadowed by MJ (based on my experience). Despite that, it does not diminish her legacy as a performer and as an artist.

Nicki has a double platinum SOLO song, what are you talking about? :rip:

And Mariah got a Triple Platinum SOLO single in the UK. :lipton2:

Also, the majority of Nikki certifications still comes from her 45 sec features on other people's song.

Your point?????

I don't know what you are trying to prove with these numbers dahling.

The truth of the matter is that Mariah was never big anywhere in Europe, Latin America etc.. She barely had any No1s anywhere in Europe. Only 2 in the UK while other females have tons of No1s. Rihanna has like 11 No1s in the UK. RiRi might even pass Madonna at some point.

I wasn’t saying ANYTHING about Mariah :deadbanana4:

i was showing that you are extremely wrong about Nicki not having her own hits here in the UK.

Nicki has 6,960,000 certified units that are her OWN work across singles and albums, meaning more than half of her certified sales come from her own music.

Gotcha!

Double platinum single in 2010s is NOT a REAL HIT for me... And I think she does not have a #1 as a lead artist over there either.

I'd call that a minor hit if anything.

You’re a dummy :deadbanana4:

Super Bass spent 49 weeks on the chart, Starships spent 45 weeks on the charts (11 T10), Bang Bang which Nicki is one of 3 lead artists hit #1.

Starships is also one of the biggest female songs of the decade here, as shown in the chart released the other day.

Sorry, sweetie, but Nicki has HITS here in the UK and sales on her own.
