Urban music was huge in the early 2000’s the same way it is now, but it wasn’t nearly as snubbed on the format. it literally isn't the definiton, no. It's not on Pop's top 50 yet. God's Plan was getting similar support tho, so it's not all that surprising. It just goes to show Drake's sway with those formats.
Pop Art Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 In reference to the ongoing discussion about why radio is so "out of touch" with what's smashing on the Hot 100, I had a thought today that might explain part of this discrepancy. As we know, streaming is fueled largely by younger listeners. From what I've seen, that same age range also tends to have cars that have auxiliary cords, or they find a cost effective method to allow their vehicles to have the same basic capability, which they use to utilize to play music from streaming services while driving. Additionally, when on the job, at parties, and whatnot, they also tend to plug in their phones/open their streaming app or website to listen to music rather than turn on the radio. (Essentially, whenever music is to be played, in any setting, streaming sites rather than radio is the chosen medium for this younger crowd.) This got me thinking, perhaps the reason why radio keeps skewing away from songs that are clearly big on streaming is because young people - the audience that fuels streaming - simply isn't listening to the radio anymore, thus they are left with the taste of a middle aged and older audience, which would also explain why the radio charts and digital charts line up far better than the former (and the latter for that matter) does with streaming charts, since the general consensus is that this middle and older age group hasn't transitioned from digital purchases to streaming. Now that I typed all this up I feel like this is actually common knowledge and I'm just repeating the obvious. Also I don't know why I kept refereeing to young people as "they" when I'm part of them.

I am totally agree with this. Even when i'm on the car I and a lot of my friends that i had asked usually put on earphones and uses streaming app when driving with another person (driver, parents, etc) thus making the one that didn't put on earphones "decides" which song should stay or not.
