BuzzFeed: 18 reasons "ARTPOP" was actually a masterpiece

1. Artpop was a project, not just an album.

2. The ArtRave launch party was a huge artistic and logistical feat.

3. During the Artpop era, Gaga flexed her art history muscles, referencing Renaissance-era art and Greco-Roman classicism.

4. Artpop was meant to leave a lasting mark on how pop culture and the art world interact, but it was widely misinterpreted and unfairly stacked up against other pop albums that weren't even comparable.

5. Jeff Koons designed the Artpop album cover, a collage of Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, and Koons' own Gazing Ball, another example of pop culture meshing with art.

6. Gaga pushed sexual boundaries yet again with the power anthem for all power-bottoms: "G.U.Y."

12. Gaga jam-packed the "Applause" music video with cultural references, like this homage to Alexander McQueen and the Greek myth of Icarus.

13. And her "Applause" video black skullcap look wasn't just meant to be artsy and chic — it's a reference to the character of Death in Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal, and the cultural archetype of the "jester."

14. There are also a TON of references to this artistic movement from the early 1900s called German Expressionism.

ARTPOP was missunderstood tho.

Like people are so stupid :rip:

She literally meant the opposite of POPART and all critics and haters yelled "BUT WHERE IS THE ART"

When all Gaga meant by this concept was incorporating famous ART pieces into music, just how Warhol incorporated famous Pop star into art.

Hence why she was dressing as Mona Lisa and so on and so on.

ARTPOP was Gaga's weakest, but Gaga's weakest >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A LEGEND.

I don't care about the era, the album was good. Everyone's doing too much on it cause the era was messy. If the album had dropped out of nowhere like Beyoncé's self-titled, it would have been received way more positively.

Delusional stan nonsense. The launch party was a disaster, the DNA/Minecraft **** in the G.U.Y video was absolute garbage & the music wasn’t misunderstood, it was just trash. I get that we all want 2011 Gaga back but lauding her worst work isn’t gonna flatter her into getting a leotard back on.

17. So, actually, the Artpop era was just one big performance.

Executing the concept behind Artpop was an almost impossible, even laughable goal. But Gaga has never shied away from being laughed at, or attempting the impossible, or exaggerating her life, persona, and work to performative extremes. And that is how Artpop will be remembered — a performance of the pop star desperate for self-awareness, desperate to be something more than just pop, begging the question as to whether that's even possible.

That's EXACTLY why I love ARTPOP so much! The goal to combine art and pop was never achievable and Gaga failed hard in some aspects. But that's so interesting about it. For me it felt like, though unintentionally, she was living the album right in front of our eyes. A high start with Applause, the messy drama and blackout after Do What U Want, her strong return with the tour and then being on top again with Cheek To Cheek. It's the journey of the album, really. I respect the opinion of other's who think of ARTPOP as a disaster project, but for me it is the era where I felt being the closest to Gaga.

delusional? is it that far-fetched to think someone may be able to appreciate a piece of work that you misunderstand?
