Letting airplay grow. So the song can SMASH iTunes when it is actually released. Because Airplay doesn't matter in the UK Charts It's all sales. It is a horrible system. But that's why
Uh, it's ridiculous though. Surely that can't be a smart system any more with the shocking growth of Pirated music? I mean, with a release date for 6 weeks time it's going to force me to pirate ACH, and I don't know if I'll be bothered with buying it after that.
True i don't like that system. Every hit in the UK is pre-planned. They never have those "out of the blue" big hits.. Also your pirating point is really valid. Idon't know why the record companies didn't think of that...
And besides; the endlessly waiting on a HQ download of a song must be so frustrating >.>

instead of waiting weeks to pay for a song or album that has been released in other countries already I'm just going to download for free now. doesn't bother me if I can download something for free ,weeks before it is released here just because they are thirsty for a number 1.
it is a weird system in the time we live in, especally with worldwide artists.
If it ever changes again, they need to re-invent and re-work a lot of things, especially the power that radio has in the UK. They can make and break certain artists.
It's quite a messy system. I neither like it, but we can't expect it to turn into a "normal" system so soon. Still, we're already on the way. Singles which are released after the album already have to deal with an on air/on sale system.
Yes, airplay doesn't count in the UK chart, so they like to release the song to radio a few weeks before iTunes, which is usually why we get them later than the U.S
Although radio here in the UK have a rule that they can't spin a song before a month of it's release (not sure the actual time length) But say a song's release date is September, they aren't allowed to spin the song usually until August.
To look life in the face, always, to look life in the face and to know it for what it is. At last to know it, to love it for what it is, and then, to put it away. Always the years between us, always the years. Always the love. Always the hours.
But having radio have such a large prescence isnt good either.
Radio here still overplay songs like WHYB and Back In Time etc. and because of that theyre still in the top 30 on the official chart. Likewise, songs get paid dust by radio and even if they do well Sales-wise, they end up flopping.
Spectrum had potential to chart in the top 25 but radio never played it so it didnt even chart.
Sorry, I just had to rant because I hate the formula Canadian charts have
Promotion - so they can actually be in the country to promote the single.
Album sales - the Uk tends to get an album right after the first hit single, or so has been the trend. Also they can promote album and first single at the same time on one trip. Flying back and forth across the atlantic is not fun, trust me.
As annoying as it is it is probably the better idea. The song is available via certain methods until it is officially released here. We normally get album a day or two earlier in Ireland though.
Cause they said this:
"Hey let's make the online piracy grow and the artists sell worse cause who wants to buy a single when it's done with it's airplay on the radio and already have an illegal copy? I think it's a great idea!"
It may work for local acts though..like Cheryl Cole.
