It has nothing to do with fanbase size. MTV chooses the final winners based on who they think will bring in the ratings. Katy's fanbase is bigger, so it could be Katy, but if MTV wants controversy and to piss people off, they'll give it to GOTYE.

I want Wide Awake to win, but I am afraid WFL might win. It has more views and was bigger. Though that doesn't always guarantee a win. Look at last year. Plus, Wide Awake had the advantage of being a current single.

From the past few years nominations and wins, I don't think MTV decided on those. Like for last year, they could give to Adele if controversy is what they wanted.
