After a current thread of mine, I have a newfound respect for Katy Perry: I think that she is talented, can sing, and works with the right people.
My question is could any of the current pop girls pull off her music and have it sell the way she does?

I don't think Katy's music is very specific to her at all. Carly Jepsen could probably pull off The One That Got Away for instance. P!nk could probably sing Firework. Kelly Clarkson could probably sing Part Of Me. Ke$ha could probably pull off Last Friday Night. Taylor Swift could probably sing Wide Awake, etc. and they would probably end up sounding similarly and achieving similar success overall. I mean her sound in general is so pedestrian and non-specific that it really isn't distinct only to her. I never hear a person say "oh that's such a Katy song" because she doesn't really have a sound that is really specific to her. I don't think her vocals or her deliveries are anything particularly special or even unique. Those facts aside ultimately the work is in her name and I guess that is all that matters.

Yes, many other artists could pull off her music. She's extremely replaceable. What she lacks talent-wise she semi-compensates for looks-wise, but her vocals don't even sound the same live as in the studio in 80% of her music, so the same touching up/autotuning that is done to her voice could be done to many others. She's obviously her own person and has her own ideas and style, but her team at Capitol has much control over her music, image, and overall commercial success.

Even though I shaded her a bit in my post above I respect the fact that Katy writes all her own material, and I guess in a way it's only right that she is the one who gets a chance to voice it.
