“With a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you want to build memories, whether it's sexual, partying or on the field,” said Solo. “I've seen people having sex right out in the open. On the grass, between buildings, people are getting down and dirty.”

And of the around 10,000 athletes, how many are taking part in what gold medal-winning swimmer Nelson Dibel has called “a two-week-long private party for thousands of hard bodies.”

“I'd say it's 70 percent to 75 percent of Olympians,” says U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte. “Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.”

With so many young, toned bodies in one place, it appears it's hard not to get distracted.

Going to training, “the girls are in skimpy panties and bras, the dudes in underwear, so you see what everybody is working with from the jump,” Breaux Greer, a U.S. javelin thrower told the magazine. “Even if their face is a 7, their body is a 20.

“I've never witnessed so much debauchery in my entire life,” added former target shooter Josh Lakatos of his time at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

But the amount of security cameras and guards around the village does mean that a lot of what goes on stays under the athletes' blue blankets. And not everybody is so happy to talk about their sexual exploits as Solo.

“We're not taking any condoms,” German hockey player Philipp Zeller told ARD television when asked about the standard Olympic kit. “We probably won't need any.”

And the athletes are strictly separated by sex. Even Australian married shooters Russell and Lauryn Mark are not allowed to share a room. Earlier this month Russell raged against Olympic officials who told him he would have to share a room with colleague Michael Diamond rather than his wife.

“Nothing against Michael,” he said. “I've roomed with him before but he doesn't wear a pink nightie the same way that Lauryn wears it. And he's not as cuddly and he doesn't shave enough and I've had enough of him.”

And some athletes are not just in it for the sex, but have also met their long term partners at the Olympics. Tennis star Roger Federer is one.

“A fantastic, magical time,” Federer said of his time in Sydney where he met his wife Mirka. “All through the Olympics, in the village, we were getting on well, and then all of a sudden we had this kiss on the last day.”

The Swiss couple have been married since 2009 and now have twins.

Perhaps the most well known Olympic couple of all time is the king and queen of Sweden. A young King Gustav XVI met his future wife Silvia Sommerlath at the 1972 Munich Games, where Sommerlath was working as a hostess.

“The Olympics are there to get to know people,” says Duncan Goodhew, British gold-medal-winning swimmer and deputy mayor of the athletes village. “There are lots of stories about people who get to know each other, marry and spend the rest of their lives together.”

Or as former alpine skier Carrie Sheinberg told ESPN, the village is “just a magical, fairy-tale place, like Alice in Wonderland, where everything is possible. You could win a gold medal and you can sleep with a really hot guy.”

I can't at thousands of these Olympic athletes, while we assume they're just innocently training and preparing for their events, basically just having a massive orgy

Yes, but it was only 100,000 condoms at the last Olympics in Beijing. Clearly the demand was greater.
