The UK uses dance though, rap is not big there
Even besides rap, look at other artists biggest hits there, like Chris and Kelly Rowland, etc - it sure ain't their R&B/urban songs - it's their pop ones. That doesn't make them not R&B artists.
The UK likes the dance sound, but Nicki's FANS over there use everything and every aspect of her, just watch the tour vids and hear them

For this album Nicki is a rapper in the same sense that a pop artist can rap. That isnt an insult, it's great to have success, but I cant stand people claiming she's still some hip hop sensation while releasing stuff like Starships or Pound the Alarm. Because if let's say Britney released those EXACT same songs they wouldnt be considered rap.
|
Now you know Britney would never release Starships or Pound The Alarm and if she did, she wouldn't be rapping, it would sound totally different.
Like someone else mentioned, rapping is a DELIVERY method. Nicki is a rapper and she raps on Roman Reloaded just like she rapped on Pink Friday.
Just because she has 5-6 more songs with a pop instrumental instead of an urban one does not change that.

I hate that artists are labeled to one genera for their entire career. I mean people act as if its impossible to have an hip hop/pop artist. It sucks that Nicki gets blasted for actually being versatile.

Change the Britney analogy to Kesha, Gwen, or Fergie and I agree 110%

like this is a big deal
She is primarily hip-hop and has some pop...nothing wrong with that
If she was doing poorly with these pop singles everyone would be laughing their asses off saying she should stick to hip-hop...but because she's having success with them, its a problem
Get outta here with that

Perhaps in the mainstream sense Nicki serves as "dance music's premier female rapper" but that's pretty much because she's been the only female rapper in the mainstream conversation. It's been said before, but on Nicki's dance tracks she's essentially Nicki lite—her lyrics are uninteresting and plain when put up against the rest of her work. Objectively, Azealia is the only one actively pursuing this sort of dance-rap existence. Nicki is rapping over dance productions with big choruses and breaks for one reason only: to keep a pop audience.
Not a bad thing, but it's the way it is.

And yet, you're opinion isn't really valid because I know exactly what you're doing.

I disagree. Nicki is labeled as a rapper and a hip hop artist because her discography is all hip hop and rap, with some well known deviations. A song like Starships or Pound The Alarm in the midst of songs like Itty Bitty Piggy, I Get Crazy, Gettin' Paid, Did It On 'Em, Roman's Revenge, Come on a Cone, I Am Your Leader, Beez In The Trap, etc isn't going to change the fact that she's a hip hop artist and a rapper.
Whereas if Britney released a song like Beez in the Trap that smashed, that song among the rest of her discography (Baby One More Time, You Drive Me Crazy, Overprotected, I'm A Slave 4 U, Toxic, Circus, Gimme More, Til The World Ends, etc) wouldn't change the fact that she is still primarily a pop singer.
It's all about exceptions to the rule. Minority vs. majority.
And you won't get a point. You didn't trash her, you just stated your opinion. Nothin' wrong with that.

They are clearly calling her a rapper who releases dance music. Not a full on dance artist.
