Some background info: 2009 was the year that the indie crowd really overshot the pop crowd in terms of critical consensus.
If you remember, the 2008 - 2009 nominees for AoTY were:
I Am ... Sasha Fierce
None truly great - in fact, most middling/mediocre, but all very successful.
None were represented in the 09 Pazz and Jop Poll. Five of the six albums of the year, critically, were:
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
and the winner, Merriweather Post Pavilion
First time the critical consensus has gone in such a fervently hip direction - very indie, very Brooklyn. It was a fascinating time, and I think it would make a fascinating rate. Especially since all five bands were release new material in the next year.
My problem with MPP and Bitte Orca is that the majority of these songs sound nothing like what I expected based on the catchy lead single. And with Phoenix's album, a ton of the songs do follow the the same formula, more than I remembered.
