It seems that this year we have a new trend and that is artist releasing lyric videos of their new releases to build up hype which is a excellent marketing imo.
It's definitely a relatively new trend, in terms of how popular/commonplace it is now, but it's tough to pinpoint exactly which video made it take off.
I think it's very smart -- that way, there's an official artist-controlled version of the song on YouTube, and the more inventive videos give fans something to watch while they wait for the video.

The first I saw too. Either way it might not have been the first one but the question is who started it, Katy had the relevance at that point to start that trend.
Just because Katy wasn't the first one doesn't mean she wasn't the one who made it popular. I think she definitely had some influence there and I agree about the video of **** You.
