This is basically a thread asking about which album do you think was the worst follow up.
What I took into consideration:
I took a look at all the pop girls, and seen which album really lacked after a successful previous album. It may be a terrible follow up in terms of sales and/or in terms of content. Some artists are missing from the list (GaGa & Katy) because they lack a bad follow up.
Emotions followed Mariah's golden eponymous album, an album that won her 2 Grammy awards and tons of nominations. This album was still a decent seller, however, in terms of quality, it was a huge drop from the standard of her previous album. It did have it's share of hits, but overall, it was just a boring.
Whitney had huge success in the 80's in terms of album content and singles success. However, the follow up to Whitney's self titled second album, was a disaster. The album may have produced some successful singles, but in terms of the content, it was just plain bad. Arguably Whitney's worst album, thankfully for her sake, she had The Bodyguard as a follow up to bounce back from this catastrophe.
Both commercially and critically, this album was worse than Janet's All for You. This album not only ended Janet's streak of number one albums, but also failed to produce a successful single. It also foreshadowed a downfall in the career of Janet.
Commercially, this album failed to live up to the standards set by Loud. Loud verified Rihanna's superiority over all the other pop girls, and it showed how big she was all around the world. This album may have had her biggest hit, but in terms of sales, it's been a tremendous dud in comparison to Loud. The album is struggling to sell 1 million copies in the US.
After IASF, Beyoncé was seen as a huge worldwide superstar and her status was unrivaled by anyone at the time. IASF became her most successful era selling over 6.5 million copies worldwide. Then she released 4, which although a much better album, failed to get a smash hit single. The album wasn't commercially successful for Beyoncé, despite many considering it to be her best.
An explanation is not needed.
Many Britbots consider this her best album, but in terms of commercial success, it was lacking. It broke Britney's record of having all albums peak @ #1 due to a change up in rules and sold poorly in comparison to ITZ. The singles on the album also were not as successful as the ones released from ITZ.
Nicki Minaj was on her way to making female rap mainstream, and then she releases this. Pink Friday received Positive reception, but PFRR was just mediocre. The album showed Minaj selling out and taking a new pop sound which ultimately failed to catch on and caused her to lose a chunk of her core fanbase.
You guys may not know Duffy, but in England, she had a MASSIVE first album (Rockferry). It was even #1 on the Year end list of 2008 in England and she was loved by them & critics who praised her to death. Then she releases this to mixed reception and flop singles. This album was a TERRIBLE follow up to her previous album both from a commercial & critical standpoint.
Her first album was huge success globally thanks to Bleeding Love & Better in Time. This album, however, could not follow up to the massive success of Spirit. The album was also not very well received by critics. Overall, it was just a dud.
Madonna showed time was doing nothing to stop her career from moving forward when she released to Music. That era showed just how easily she could adjust to current times. And then she releases American Life. Critically worse than Music & Commercially worse than Music, this album was a flop for the Queen of Pop.
Fever was her biggest era commercially. This album may have gotten good reviews, but it completely failed to reach the same level of Global domination Fever got.
Which album do you think was the worst follow up? Take everything mentioned into consideration & choose just one.
