Idol/RCA didn't expect Kelly Clarkson to sell more then 500,000 copies with Thankful. So they didn't even shipped the album.
The Album Debuted at #1 with 297k on it's first week and
sold over a million albums 5 weeks later.
It produced her first #1 billboard hot 100 single A Moment like this
and the platinum single Miss Independent which
held the throne for 6 weeks on the pop charts and
became Kelly's second top 10 single on the billboard hot 100.
The album sold over 2.8 albums in the US and
over 4.5 million albums worldwide.
How dare they doubt "A Moment Like This" and "Miss Independent" to help the album sales
The funny thing is that A Moment Like This was released 7 months before the album got released. And Kelly fought really really hard to have Miss Independent as a single. They thought Miss Independent would flop and instead it was the song that made the album blew up.
”You know, Clive hated ‘Walk Away’ and ‘Because of You’,” Clarkson tells Blender between nibbles of salmon. It’s mid-evening now, and we’re seated in an outdoorbungalow at a chic Hollywood hotel (our choice, not Kelly’s: “I never go out,” shesays, believably. “If I’m in L.A., I’m usually at my house playing Guitar Hero.”) She continues: “Everyone keeps saying how hard this record must be, because of all the crap surrounding it, but that last one was really hard to make. I literally got told to my face that it wouldn’t sell more than 600,000 copies. And I got lied to. One reason Idon’t like working with people at the label is that they lie. They told me, ‘We really want you to go to Sweden. These people really want to write with you.’ So I flew to Sweden with lyrics I’d written to this track I’d been sent, ‘Since U Been Gone.’ I get there, and the writers are like, ‘Oh, we already have lyrics. We just want you to singit.’ It was really awkward. It was mean. That’s why there’s no relationship with them. Because I don’t like to be lied to.”

Even if you don't like all the material she's done, you have to respect that she stays true to herself. I know she said she's getting along with the label better these days. Probably since a lot of the people who didn't fuller support her either got fired, demoted, or left the label
