Okay. Let me set the atmosphere. It is 2009, and Overcome by Alexandra Burke is smashing all over Europe. She achieves six top 20s (not inclding charity singles) singles and is being played with heavy rotation.

Fast forward to 2012. Alexandra Burke is gearing up to release her second album Heartbreak On Hold to much fanfare. Elephant is released as a lead single, and it does not get played on key BBC radio playlists in Britain.

My Question Is........What Happened between the two?

No one really knows, radio have just blacklisted her. IMO its because she records songs underneath her talent.

I stopped listening to her when she re-released Overcome. Start Without You was just bland and generic imo, after that I stopped caring about her. Maybe it's just her musical style. Leona kind of had the same style, and they stopped playing her stuff, too.

I understand what you're saying, but I have never seen radio do that to somebody before.
(example: Nicki Minaj starts dabbling in generic pop (way less than her talent) and ends up topping American pop radio airplay charts for about four months (and counting).

I don't think It shouldn't be happening to her, she's one of the best acts to have come from X-Factor. I think the reason Nicki charted with Starships is mainly down to the promotion she did for it even though it's not one of her best songs whereas Alex only did it the UK and not around Europe, but most of the blame goes to SYCO for not doing a better job with her. No wonder she decided to leave them, hopefully Leona does the same thing as well.

I think the wheels have derailed on her career. The music is bland and so generic its void of personality. Her image is a complete mess and the era is already a sloppy disaster before its truly got going. Her videos are cheap and nasty looking which is an indication that her label has lost faith in her and is refusing to cough the big monies.

The radio stations are just jumping off early. They want to be seen to be playing the right sort of music and especially for the BBC they don't want to be seen to be playing too many reality TV stars music, with One Direction, Cher Lloyd, Cheryl, Leona Lewis (they have to support her because she supporting their Hackney weekend) and inevitably Little Mix they don't have room for others and Alexandra has been relegated to the hasbeen pile.

There's something wrong in the chain. She needs a musical overhaul. Her debut was fine. I like the new album but people won't. And she really needs to SORT it out. The videos aren't an issue, it's the music. The songs need to be built around her voice, and leave electro behind. It has few purposes. People want big vocals, piano ballads and soul. Electro does not provide that.I don't want to agree with the poster above, but I have to. She's completely ignored. She really should've gone to the US. ****ing ridiculous. You get a big ass contract and waste it? You know how many would kill to have that?

I loved Bad Boys, Broken Heels and Overcome in general. Start Without You was where I started to lose interest in her. That song was horrendous.
None of her new stuff has wowed me so far.
It's sad because she's singing songs that don't showcase her talent very well (and we all know the bish can sing).

I think you are completely right. I think she needs to either:
1) Hook up with Diplo and create militant,militaristic, futuristic pop tracks like End Of TIme and Up The Fun
2) Create a female Climax (by Usher)
3) Go the Adele route and produce Rumour Has Its
4) Go the Ryan Tedder/Leona "big ballad" route

Or: (disclaimer, this is a very brash move)
Move to the United States, sever ties with the U.K., and try to make it here!

It's because she was given crappy songs. Her voice is ten times better than Leonas. Leon's is just a Mariah Carey carbon copy. If Burke had Leonas songs she would have smashed. Even if she came out with elephant or let it go 1st, she would have smashed. It's too late for her now.
