I actually saw the older film in school today. Doesn't seem interesting enough to watch but I enjoyed reading the book.

Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan
It's coming for Art Direction and Costume Design nominations though. The visuals are gorgeous but they feel too vibrant/flashy and don't capture the haunting feeling that the book had.

It's looks expensive. The cinematography seems great. I don't think it'll be any kind of masterpiece though because it's Baz Luhrman plus Carey Mulligan still looks too much like Michelle Williams so it's weird to see her paired with DiCaprio after Shutter Island.

I don't know why this wasn't assigned in my high school, it seems like everyone has read this book. I'm gonna read it over the summer.
I think it looks good, I'm a fan of Baz even though the only thing he's made that's a true masterpiece is Moulin Rouge.

I'd argue that you may have misinterpreted the book then -- the whole book was about excess, flashiness for flashiness' sake, and how when you get beneath the glimmering, glittering exterior, there may be something haunting underneath. I'm sure the movie will get there, but of course the trailer is going to show off the bangs and whistles while only hinting at the smaller character moments. I see a lot of "haunting" in this trailer, especially as it goes on.

No ****ING way.
I didn't expect a trailer to come so quickly!
This is one of my favorite books ever written, and Luhrmann is such an amazing director
Am so excited for this movie (although I could do without the 3D)
Oh and using a WTT song for the trailer shows incredible understanding of the themes of the film and the album.

It's a relatively thin book and only takes a couple to few days to read.

I'll go buy it at a used book store soon. I've been meaning to read it once the film got announced.

Disappointing trailer.
I didn't get a feeling for what it's going to be like tonally.

I am aware of what the book is about but this just seems too stylized/modernized, it gives more of a Moulin Rouge! atmosphere than the melancholy vibe that the book had.
I know it's just the trailer but I expected better, plus I'm not sure Luhrmann can handle this type of movie.

You don't think Luhrmann can handle melancholy?
Rewatch the last 20 minutes of Moulin Rouge and then come back and say that.

Gurl, we're watching it too. I had no idea they were making a movie.

Omff the Robert Redford adaptation is the PITS, especially Myrtle
The tv movie with Paul Rudd as Nick also sucked though
Seriously, none of the adaptations of TGG have been any good. I think this one will be the first one that's actually worth a damn

Really? I thought this was a tonally amazing trailer. I loved how there were glimpses at how dark the story gets, and just how much the characters come unraveled, as the trailer went on.
