I have often wondered the same thing. The song is a masterpiece, like another poster said. I can only think of one possible reason, which is that it wasn't released right after VMAs.

Agree, just bad management.
At-least it received decent radio play.

It's actually one of THE best Beyonce songs period.

Cause it wasn't released for Mainstream Airplay, only for R&B/Hip Hop formats. There it reached #1 for 7 weeks IIRC (more than 50m AI, that's amazing without Pop support). Digitally it's the best-selling single after Best Thing I Never Had and I'm sure that if it would've had some Pop Radio exposure (that helps the song selling) could have been Platinum.

It underperformed because of poor handling by the label and management. It should of been sent to radio a couple weeks before the VMAs performance. They waited months after VMAs to send it to radio where it only got a limited release to Urban AC (where it is still #1) & R&B formats. It did well considering the circumstances. Top 40 radio were also told not to add it.

7 weeks at #1 on the R&B charts.


This could of worked as a lead single instead of RTW as well. such missed opportunities

Agree. Sometimes I wonder if these labels know what their doing. Top 40 would of played this. In fact a top 40 station in my area spinned it regularly! I airplay was decent overall. And it became iconic thanks to the VMAs!
