Avengers' Joss Whedon talks about his rejected Batman film

Joss Whedon may have signed his soul over to Marvel, but the director recently recalled his own idea for a Batman movie before the franchise was eventually given to Christopher Nolan.
Not unlike Batman Begins, Whedon's film would have focused heavily on the origins of the Caped Crusader. However, Whedon noted that he was more interested in following the early years of Bruce Wayne as "a morbid, death-obsessed kid."
Explained Whedon, "He's like this tiny 12-year-old who's about to get the s#!t kicked out of him. And then it cuts to Wayne Manor, and Alfred is running like something terrible has happened, and he finds Bruce, and he's back from the fight, and he's completely fine. And Bruce is like, 'I stopped them. I can stop them.' That was the moment for me. When he goes 'Oh, wait a minute; I can actually do something about this.' The moment he gets that purpose, instead of just sort of being overwhelmed by the grief of his parents' death."
But as we all know, that particular vision of the Dark Knight never really jived with Warner Bros. at the pitch meeting. And as Whedon recounts, his rejection wasn't the only bad news he received that day.
"The executive was looking at me like I was Agent Smith made of numbers," he continued. "He wasn't seeing me at all. And I was driving back to work, and I was like, 'Why did I do that? Why did I get so invested in that Batman story? How much more evidence do I need that the machine doesn't care about my vision? And I got back to work and got a phone call that Firefly was cancelled. And I was like, 'It was a rhetorical question! It was not actually a request! Come on!'"

What do you think about Joss' vision for a Batman film? Is it better than Nolan's or is it worse?

Tbh, I don't really like Nolan's direction but I guess he's that one guy who truly saved the Batman film franchise from the brink of oblivion.

He also did help in showing Hollywood that the mass public does like to hear about a superhero's background story intertwined with good action. Before, some directors just focused on high produced action with a lot of explosions with a shallow story.

Spiderman already did that but the big difference is Batman, most notably, the Dark Knight has always been into the darker side of the moon then Heath Ledger's death also gave the franchise the boost it needed. I'm not sure how they'll do without the hype they had back then as I was incredibly disappointed with Inception. I don't know what he's going to do but I'm hoping it's something interesting considering this gonna be the end.
All I know is they're probably going to make way for Bruce Wayne the old and miserable unmarried man that he is during Batman Beyond.

The old Spiderman movies didn't even really focus on his background much. The new Amazing Spiderman movie is doing that though. The next movie is gonna be huge because people are going to want to see if he can top TDK. We've seen how huge the Trailer was in views and how the movie sold out in some locations in LA + NY back In Jan/Feb.

I am good with Nolan behind Batman and Joss behind The Avengers. Both bring sth new to the table. One is more into dark side of the comic world while the other believes in humor. Both have great taste in action sequence etc.

I don't like Nolan much outside of Batman, but let's be honest, the best Batman franchise is his version. TDKR looks just as epic as the last one, of course, it won't be topped I think mainly because of the lack of Heath Ledger as the Joker. I hope people are open-minded about and move on from the past.

I'm not going into the theater thinking that it can't be topped because as you can see in the trailer, Bane is going to do a lot of diabolical ****. Like when they showed all of the bridges being blown up and people being stranded all over town. It seems like he's going to do a lot more **** than the Joker IMO and almost completely destroy Gotham.

Christopher Nolan's franchise is utter genius. He captured the darkness of the Batman series perfectly. They're so deep.

That idea doesn't sound that interesting tbh. Christopher did a great job at bringing back Batman to life. They're just fantastic, I love them and I cannot wait for the last one. Inception is also another masterpiece he made, I mean can it even get better?

It came off as boring to me actually. I'm a huge Nolan fan. Inception was just pure brilliance when you look at the real meanings behind everything and the whole thing with Mal and Leo was so well thought out. I haven't been this excited for a movie as I am for TDKR. I'm pumped.
