Will a hip hop song get to #1 on the Hot 100 this year?
Black and Yellow, which was one of the biggest songs of 2010/2011 got to #1 last year after the Superbowl, although it is quite pop sounding.
So what do you think? Can a hip hop song get to #1 this year? If one doesn't 2012 will be the first year with no hip hop #1s since 2000!!

I hope, but I really doubt it. The competition right now is so tough and I doubt that any Hip Hop single can handle it.

THIS. If that didn't do it I can't really see anything else accomplishing that anytime in the near future.

Probably so.
It'll be hard, but not impossible at all.
I feel like Drake messed up his chances with "Take Care."

I also voted "no". As you can probably tell by my opening post, I would love it to happen, but I really just can't imagine it happening ever again.

+1, If this couldn't get to number one with two of the biggest hip hop artists, others songs don't stand a chance.
Rihanna | Lady Gaga | Lana Del Rey | Ellie Goulding | Azealia Banks | M.I.A. | Madonna Coldplay | Kanye West | Drake | Frank Ocean | Eminem | Kings Of Leon | Michael Jackson
Paramore | La Roux | Black Eyed Peas

This is one of the things I was thinking aswell. That song was MASSIVE and everywhere at the time. I can't really imagine a hip hop song getting more popular than that now.

I agree. I envisioned it could've been a huge hit, since it went #1 on iTunes the day it was released. They take too long with the video, and hardly any promotion at all, though he was on tour.
----------------
Possibly. "Amen" by Meek Mill ft Drake and Jerimih could do it. "212" could snatch it in the summer. So infectious.

212 has been a big hit in my country already. I agree it's very catchy, and has dance influences, which gives it more crossover appeal.
B.o.B has a lot of very mainstream sounding songs on his album, so maybe one of them could.
Also, another thing worth noting is that now that Billboard include the On-Demand chart in the Hot 100, it boosts basically all the hip hop (and alternative) songs up the chart.
I still think it's very unlikely to happen though. It's weird to see a hip hop song even in the top 10 on iTunes these days.

Eminem is coming this year, so we'll see if he does something. I would love a female hip hop artist to get a #1 ...with a hip hop song, of course.

I think it would've hit #1 if they did any kind of promotion. The music video came too late, if it was earlier and not just a concert performance it would've done wonders for the song I think.

I don't think so.
It's been really hard for Hip Hop to even hit the Top 10. Just look at Nicki's urban stuff. They all just missed the Top 10, and when she switched to pop - BOOM, Top 10 hits.
If Nicki Minaj had to switch to pop-rap in order to get the majority of her Top 10 hits (aside from Bottoms Up), then how is a rapper who doesn't go that route supposed to even hit the Top 10?

212 needs an URBAN REMIX in order to gain urban spins, which would lead to sales.
