Janet's last album hasn't even been certified gold. 2004's Damita Jo barely sold 3 million worldwide. Janet's last #1 single was in 2001. She can keep the "iconic" career she USED to have.

Britney's influence in Janet can be seen but I would not say she looked like a clone of Janet. Britney is on another league. Majority of her songs are pop or electro while Janet's more on the urban side. Britney never WAS deemed by the public as the next Janet too, its just the stans that are really reaching it.

I'd go with Britney here she was unstopabble in her peak and her first 5 albums were highly noted whether on sales or in critical acclaim.

Britney getting [shortlived] #1s is none of my concern in the grand scheme of things. Rihanna and Ke$ha also gets those things. Katy Perry tied Michael Jackson's record. Disposable hits mean nothing.
