Generic to me means songs that have little to no value (disposable). Even though Britney's music has always been created to sell, her discography is filled with amazingly-produced music that has stood the test of time.
Up until "Talk That Talk", Rihanna's discography, though also created to sell, has remained different even when all of her peers started following a certain trend.
There's nothing generic about one of the most successful debut albums in the past ten years. I mean, sure, it deals with generic issues, like sex, clubbing, and dancing, but songs like "Paparazzi" define the opposite of generic and are absolutely phenomenal.
1. Lady GaGa - which other pop girl is making tracks like "Heavy Metal Lover" and "The Edge Of Glory"?
2. Rihanna - she has some very distinctive songs, such as "What's My Name" and "Rude Boy"; she has the whole Caribbean thing going for her
3. Britney Spears - "Toxic", Blackout, "Hold It Against Me"
4. Katy Perry - let's not.

I really think all have generic theme going. I voted for Rihanna thought cause she is the only pop girl that does the Caribbean tune and does it well. The other pop girls do more of a generic route... Though Born This Way isn;t very generic either!

I really wish Rihanna would embrace this side of her. Her "Caribbean" tracks are my favorite tracks by her.
