I don't think Adele would have blown up the way she did if she was black!

Duca, get a job. Apparently I didn't make myself clear. I never said white people couldn't make Urban music. I said too many people refuse to acknowledge the impact that Black musicians and sounds that originated from the Black American community have had on modern Pop music. Even Justin stated Michael "taught him to sing" and was his idol. No one is taking any credit away from Justin's talent, but yes, you stan for an artist that is a product of Black producers and sounds that originated in the African-American community , get over it.
- Eminem is the best-selling artist of the decade; He even wrote an entire song called "White America" talking about how his race helped his sales and brought Hip-Hop to the forefront. YES, Eminem himself said this.
- Elvis was controversial at the time because the older generation saw him as "Black" music, but that didn't prevent him from becoming one of the most successful, iconic artists of all time, setting records, and changed the direction modern music in the 70s.
The author of the article may be a bit sporadic, but he makes a brilliant point, and the facts are there nonetheless.

If anyone, Adele sounds like Alison Moyet, another white, well-proportioned southern English woman.
I really dislike these whole race discussions about why certain artists are successful. She makes great music, that's why so many like her.
Adele, Avril and Lana.

I'm sure it's nothing to do with her talent or the quality of her songwriting.

^That's not just it though. People act like she's the only one that can sing, when in the big vocalist pool, she's a small fry. No one is doubting her talent, but there are other factors. There are hardly any white female vocalists that just stand and belt. People mean she has the qualities most black females have in the industry which is a powerful voice. Don't dislike them (discussions) because they have a place.

Who acts like she's the "only one who can sing"? I haven't heard anyone say that before.
I dislike such discussions because I think that anyone of any race with enough talent will succeed in the music business if their songs/talent are good enough and connect with enough people. I don't like the implication that white females can only be successful if they imitate black females.
Also I think a powerful voice is given by your body frame rather than your skin colour in general.

There is some (unfortunate) truth to his statement.

Mess, I've never heard anyone say she sounds black.
Her music does not sound like contemporary American "black" music (R&B, Hip Hop) anyway, it's distinctly British (and distinctly British things are mostly white). People fell in love with her because she was something refreshing at a time where dance-pop is (was?) dominating, and had two KILLER singles that transcended age groups and genres (RITD, SLY). She has influences from music mostly peformed by black people like soul and R&B, but she has made it her own.

His points are moot. Adele doesn't sound like a black woman so anyone who thinks she does is idiotic.

Plenty of people can sing better than Adele, but not many people had "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" on their album.
People want good songs, not good singers. This is why all the American Idol people fail with a few exceptions...your voice will carry you nowhere if you aren't singing something worthwhile.

Estelle said the same thing a few years ago (before Adele really blew up).
It was in 2008, there was a surge in Birtish urban/soul singers. Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele were all very, very popular at the time. Estelle was also popular, except the main difference with her was that she was getting less media coverage, and couldn't get signed in the UK no matter what, so had to go all the way to the US to get a record deal. She claimed this was because she was black, and that the UK were racist by having 3 massively popular white singers of that genre, even though that style of music is dominated by black people.
I can see where Estelle was coming from, but I don't think it was necessarily racist. It could easily be coincidence that the three biggest soul-pop singer in the UK were white. I can understand why all three of them were popular anyway.
